Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Questionable attributes on a Norwegian K98

#1 Post by Ken W » Thu Jul 11, 2019 11:50 am

I acquired this rifle off of a young individual at a local show. It has been.....messed with a bit but thankfully not chopped and hacked up, a.k.a sporterized. Unfortunately someone had mounted a Lyman sight, which I have removed, and have replaced the original trigger with a Timney trigger. What I find odd is that all of the Norwegian rifles I've seen that have been converted to 30-06 have had 7.62 stamped on the barrel. This one does not but is indeed in 30-06. First I thought that a new owner changed it out themselves but the barrel on it has the import stamps on it so it came into the country like this. With a 30-06 bullet being smaller than an 8mm one it can't be a re-bore and I don't see any signs of an obvious barrel sleeve. I've taken a bunch of pics of stampings on various areas. The XX5 one is on the barrel forward of the original sight. There's also a lot of glue like substance in the stock, some sort of bedding. I assume the same knob that did the sight and trigger did this as well. Anybody see or have one of these in 30-06 but with no apparent markings to indicate that caliber?

Beautiful rifle. I like original guns, but I would gladly buy one skillfully modified. Of course, my eyes are shot, and the sight would be a big help

Thanks. My eyesight isn't what it used to be either, unfortunately. A few months ago I was at a match and didn't bother taking the last round of shots at one point because I couldn't see the targets. Granted they were small and a few hundred yards out. Still.....others were hitting them. :(

Very odd that the rifle did not have the "KAL 7.62 M/M" stamped on the barrel adjacent to the HAER receiver mark. Fantastic rifles & one Mauser type I want, but not have seen at WI gun showman the last 15 years.
see the attributes on page 9

To old to fight and to old to run, a Jar head will just shoot and be done with you.
