Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

CZ-50 Chronograph reload results

#1 Post by Rapidrob » Sat Aug 04, 2018 5:58 pm

I loaded up 50 rounds of my wheel weight cast 71 grain, sized and lubed .312 bullets across a chronograph today. My wife did the shooting at 25 yards and proceeded to keep most shots in a 2-3" circle for all 50 shots!
The average MV was 1,050 FPS. High was 1,108 and the low was 998. The chronograph used is very sun-sensitive and had to be moved to stay in direct light. The sensors were 12 feet away from the muzzle.
My cast load is on average over 100 FPS faster than the factory FMJ's of the same weight. No pressure signs and brass looks like new.
Brass is energetically thrown from the pistol a good 15 feet. Recoil is very mild.
When Elaine shot steel today as well at the same distance the gong jumped as though hit with a larger caliber round.
I copied the loads on the web that out-rank the FBI minimum penetration into ballistic gel of 12". The test showed 18" of gel penetrated. That out performed .380 ACP cast lead.
When I cleaned the pistol today there was no hint of leading. Elaine likes this "hotter" load much better than the factory USA loads. She calls the factory ammo "wimpy"
The CZ-50 pistol is a little power-house with reloads and I'm sure could take an even faster load as there is no SAMI standard for the .32ACP round. All of Europe loads this round much hotter than we do.
I got to get me one for myself.

Interesting. Sounds like you have found a very good load.

What powder are you using?

Thanks.

FWIW, after seeing your reply I did some looking and, I know it is old (from the 30s-40s depending on the edition), but you may find it interesting that Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading , on page 405, cites a 3.4 gr load of Unique under a 74 grain FMJ bullet, for 985 fps and pressure of 15000 (don't know if psi or lup)

Interestingly at the time that was written only Hercules and DuPont powders were available to the handloader, and they did not release loading data due to liability concerns. Below is his disclaimer on the data from page 343:
The following list of handloads has been carefully assembled from
sources believed to be 100% reliable, and every load recommended below
should be perfectly safe in all properly constructed arms in good condition
However having no control over methods of loading, selection of
components or choice of arms, neither the publisher nor the author of this
volume assumes responsibility in the use of these tables.

At the present time neither DuPont nor Hercules is releasing loading
data in any form. Even the ammunition makers have balked on the
release of information so the following tables are the only complete source
of such data. These tables have been corrected since the first edition and
many additional loads with the recently released Dupont powders will be
found in separate tables in the supplement. All published loads have
been tested and are believed to be safe. Load carefully.
My how times have changed.

Yep, it was the beginning of "Lawyer Loads", the ignorant lawyers decided the Reloader was not competent enough to use published load data, a deliberately lowered the powder amount. It all "started" when folks bought .318 bore Mauser rifles and loaded .323 bullets increasing pressures. or so the legend is written.
Anyway the anti-gunners can get a foothold they will. Screwing up loading data is one way they have won.

Fiocchi has some HP loads that are rated at 1100fps at the muzzle. Since I can't get my pistol to reliably feed HP's, for carry purposes I usually have one of those in the chamber for the first round. Properly loaded, this thing has some punch, and the CZ is more than capable of a pistol for that!
