The Sportsmans Guide is offering Battle Packs, (200rd at @ $80.00),of Portugese (their spelling) 7.62x51 Nato FMJ. Late 70s and (supposedly) non corrosive. First has anyone tried any? Second ,where they are describing the ammo they list the velocity as 2252 fps. Now that's low in anybody's book but I'd like to try some in my small ring Natos, if there's any chance they have it right. #-o Any info or best guess appreciated.

No info at my finger tips, but it is Nato-spec ammo. I would trust Nato before I trusted SG. It is excellent ammo, and at a good price. I have seen those recently up to $199.95!!!

It is Non Corrosive ammo. I have read on another forum where alot of guys ordered it and cases had alot of tarnish and corrosion on them. Some so bad they didnt take the chance and sent it back. Battlepacks had holes in them and ammo must have been stored in bad conditions?

I had a bunch of Portugese ammo like this in the 90's, it was great stuff. I'm not going to order any, if the SG boys are willing to ship out corroded crap.

I would expect muzzle velocity around 2700 fps. I believe they are mistaken.

I bought a case that I ended up sending back. Badly corroded stuff, its the same Portuguese ammo that SAMCO sells. In fact it came in SAMCO boxes.

There's a long discussion on the FAL Files on this ammo.

Wow guys. Thanks for the info. SG customer feed back showed a couple of remarks about tarnish also. I live near an SG outlet, so I could inspect for an opening in the pack, prior to purchase. I have to agree that that velocity would be outside the parameters of Nato specs, so probably a misprint on their part. The $199.95 price is probably for the thousand round crate? Thanks again to all.

I have shot thousands of rds of Port and still have a umopened case. What SG is selling is not the norm for Port. Tarnished is one thing but corroded cases is another

I haven't see Port. surplus at that price in many years. Portuguese 7.62 for .20 per round? Much more likely to find it at .40 to .50 per round depending on the vendor and the quality of the ammo. That must be a mistake. I wish it was otherwise though... :(

I have recently run into a fella who is trying to sell some of this ammo. He was asking about double the Sportmans Guide price. He sent me the headstamp info and I think it's the Mexican Sante Fe.

Had FNM, with an "80" I took to be the year, and a "3" which according to this website

http://cartridgecollectors.org/?page=headstampcodes

FNM Fábrica Nacional de Municiones, Santa Fe, México (near Mexico City) 3

Does anyone now if this is good ammo?

He's opened several of the boxes and it looks clean. It's from 1980, does anyone now if this would be non corrosive?

Thanks,
Mike

Port is supposed to have the "1" code, but this has the "3"?

If it was Mexican would they have used the Nato symbol?

If it's Port I am going to try to buy it, if it's Mexican, I'm not so sure unless someone can say it's OK.

Thanks,
Mike
