I guess I'll see when I finally get to shoot it.

Does the Schuster also reduce the distance the brass gets thrown? I'm considering getting an extra ejector spring and trimming it down until it drops the brass close by.

Original post updated with the drawing numbers, except the ones I'm too lazy to look for.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm feeling really lucky having received something this nice plus that really nice Swede Mauser I got over winter break for $165.

Yes, it does adjust the distance the cases will be thrown.

You did good! :thumb: It's almost at pretty as my service grade.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could try steaming that dent out of the stock.

Already did that, though that dent from the rear sight did not come out completely. I'll try again later. I also discovered a crack in the stock near the clip latch. It is tiny, only about a third of an inch. I superglued it and sanded off the excess.

Be careful ,the ink stamp is easily removed
The 1960's rebuilds are starting to get somewhat collectable and if you loose the stamp you just have another birch replacement stock

I steamed individual dents with a patch and a soldering iron. It didn't get anywhere near the ink stamp or proof stamp.

Real nice rifle Ken. did they include the tag listing the TE an MW ? if so what were the readings? I'll say it again, you got a real nice rifle. You are gonna love shooting it. Be sure and put an allen wrench in your rrange bag so you can adjust the or tighten the front sight as needed.
and 1ooo rds soubds like alotta ammo, but not if you get into match shooting. start getting more when you can as you can.. you'll use atleast 88 rds per match.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. The ME is 2 and the TE is 3.5.

I figure that .30/06 isn't getting cheaper. I'll buy it now so I can enjoy it later. I keep a minimum of 1k rounds for 7.62x54R and 8mm, so I figure I might as well do the same here.

Now I need to make a brass catcher. I'm thinking I take one of those USPS Tyvek envelopes and put it on a wire frame.

I actually got to shoot a Garand for the first time after being a brass catcher for an older gentleman at my range. A friend and I were packing up and we helped him retrieve his brass so he let us shoot a clip each. I bought my Garand about 2 weeks later.

As an alternative to the Schuster gas plug, consider the one offered here: http://www.garandgear.com/m1-garand/det ... g?sef=hcfp

In my experience the Schuster valve will adjust the distance a case is thrown but not by a lot. Mine are adjusted were when single loaded using a SLED the case will come out and land right beside me but when firing as normal from an En bloc the case go to one O'clock but the force and speed of the throw is far less than without the valve. For me installing a Schuster valve on a shooter Garand is a must.

A properly lubed garand with a in spec op rod spring should throw all brass in the same general 2-3 ft area.
Just walk over and pick it up :D

Yeah, I'm aware of the ported plug. I may get a Schuster just so I can shoot it single shot.

Hey Sasquatch1916 , I'd always bring extra ammo either for myself, or to let others have a chance to shoot an M1. On several occasions I did so. It was fun seeing kids who had only used an M1 in Medal of Honor, shooting the real thing. And everyone of them wanted one afterwards. I'd give them the address for the CMP so they could do so. There was one kid, a heck of a shot with his AR 15. He did quit well with the M1..
The only bad time was when I let a kid shoot my Remington Model 1903. he was unfamilar with the sights, and i was not as clear as i should have been. I Had the rear leaf up for the appeeture. he was using the highest notch and misssing every round. I am thankful we didn't kill anyone behind the berm...

One of my Garands is set(Schuster plug open) so that is a straight pull rifle.Manually operating the bolt on a Garand is certainly not as much fun as shooting it as designed but it is a lot easier on your brass. I use this rifle in my local club's slow fire only matches and do quite well with it.If your intent is to reload your brass this method helps a lot.

I couldn't thank the guy enough. Shooting a Garand is something I've wanted to do for a long time. Lots of respect for anyone that introduces people to milsurp shooting.
