Looking to buy my first M1 Garand soon and the local shop has a 1943 Springfield M1 for $1000. Finish looks to be 100% and the wood is flawless. barrel is great and there's no muzzle erosion. so collector grade right? I'm not familiar with the CMP grading system.

is it worth $1000?

HI, really need more information to determine price. If all correct then yes, but if a mixmaster $600- $700 a better price. Check out the CMP web page and see their discriptions of their graded rifles with thier prices. Best deal going is the CMP service grade at $625. That leaves lots of money for ammo. If you can check out the drawing numbers to see if they match for the year then the price is better.

Collector Grade means they are in the same configuration as when they left the factory, with minimal use. It probably is not a Collector Grade.

This strongly indicates one or more rebuilds and subsequent refurbishment. Just not having the original barrel takes it out of CMP Collector Grade status. When you lock the bolt back, you will be able to read the mfg date on the side of the barrel, which will give you an idea of when it was rebuilt.

Look into the CMP purchase program if you want a "new" Garand, for $1K you can get a professionally rebuilt rifle with a brand new barrel that will give you very good accuracy, while maintaining the history of the rifle (original USGI receiver).

Regards,
Brian in CA

I bought a Garand with a horrible barrel for $400. Sent it to Shuff's for a new barrel, trigger job, and reparkerizing. $345 later I have a like new one that I have $745 in.

well guys, I have no idea what to look for in a Garand besides the obvious things to look for on any milsurp. I'm going back to the shop tomorrow and I'll check the serial # and any other markings I find and report back.

If all the parts are correct for a '43 Springfield Garand, then the price isn't too bad. CMP sells their correct grade Garands for around $1100 I think. Look on their site for their description of correct grade. All the parts need checked for correct drawing numbers and markings. Stock needs to have the correct cartouches. All the parts won't have numbers or markings. There are other identifiers on those parts. It will take a lot of research to be sure.

well the receiver is definitely a 1943 SA but I saw some HRA and WRA markings on smaller parts and the stock was stamped on the underside of the grip with a P and RRA stamped on the left side of the butt. since it isn't matching I talked him down some. put down some money and I'm picking it up in 10 days.

If it were all correct AND original $1000 it would have been worth 3-4 times asking price as a correct /restored rifle asking price would have been a good deal
As a mixmaster $500- $700 depending on barrel wear etc

So I've had her for almost a week now but I haven't had time to get some pics up. So here you go:
Image
late 1943 SA receiver with an April 1944 SA barrel. Most of the small bits match and the stock is marked RRA. This one has some history to it.
