A little while ago, I picked up a Yugo "Preduzece 44" 98 in trade. I already had one, but figured what the heck. I've noted some differences between them, which isn't surprising. Both bores are strong, and they both shoot well.

1) Bottom has a Yugo replacement stock; top one has a red glue laminate stock.

2) Bottom has matching receiver, bolt, stock, floorplate (bolt release, front sling mount, and rear sight are numbered but don't match); Top one has a receiver that matches the floorplate and a bolt that matches the stock. No other parts are numbered.

3) Bottom has no traces of German markings. Top has the remains of a Waffenampt on the barrel, below the rear sight.

4) The bolt release on the bottom one is blued. The top one is bright, shiney silver.

5) They are both marked "Preduzece 44" and "Mod 98", however the top one has a "6" stamped above the "Preduzece 44"

6) The cleaning rod from the top one doesn't properly fit the bottom one (it fits, but it is loose)

Below are pics of the two. Apologies for the poor lighting.

Nice pair! I think those Yugo Captures are one of the best deals around. How are the bores?

If you get the urge to oil scrub your laminate stock, don't remove the bolt dis-assembly discs, trust me on this one...

The bores are great in both. The one with the lam stock (which is the one I just got) has a couple small specks in the grooves, but is otherwise shiney. I can't tell if they are pits or just some crud that hasn't been successfully removed yet. I'm going to try something a little stronger than Hoppes on it.

Any ideas on the significance (if any) of the "6" stamped over the factory 44 marking?

I believe it's a cyrillic "Б" or in Latin a "B".

I have no idea what it means.

Nice pair! Of Mod98's. I think these are one of the best deals on the surplus market today. The ones I have refinished for guys have all been very well done refurbs. Much better than any Russian capture I have worked on.

I may add a second to my collection some day. I picked this of Gunbroker just under two years ago for $167.

Sorry,....no clue! It's definitely a Cyrilic, capital "B", but the rest of the markings are in Latin. The only thing it could be,..... is if the rifle was issued to the unit in Serbia, and they stamped this to mark them, but I for one have never seen one, and if that's the case, there must be more of them floating around.
Either way, they are both gorgeous!

If you wouldn't mind, for my curiosity, how much did you pay for each one? I found a couple on gunbroker, but the prices seem pretty steep (350-550)

The one with the Yugo replacement stock, I paid $160 for in 12/2007. I traded a Yugo M57 Tokarev for the one with the laminated stock.

Just 1 to 1.5 years ago the Mod98 could be found for under $200. I think the word is out on the quality of these and prices are up. Anything under $250 is a steal anymore.
