Anyone ponied up the huge fee and tried the new Civ V? I heard it was $150. Dang, you could get a rifle for that. Anyway, I am a Civ fan and wondered if it was any good. I didn't like the graphics in Civ IV. It was too hard to tell where one square ended and another began.

I was a big fan of CIV until Civ III and realized its the same game but with better graphics. Having been playing CIV since Sid Meier released CIV I, its kinda lost its luster for me. I have Civ IV but hardly play it anymore.

Alpha Centauri was cool, same game but different units and politics.

I have a copy installed, but I haven't had the time. As a writer part of my beat is covering games, so I still get a lot of titles to review.

But no, Civ V is NOT $150. It is $47.99 on Amazon.com.

I saw it at E3 this year and it looks really good. I hope to have time to conquer the world this weekend.

Got my wife a copy for her birthday, and she absolutely loves it. Don't know much about the actual gameplay. The pricetag from walmart was right at $50

I hope to pick up a copy when I have cash available. Looks very good, though it's getting a little negative feedback from the online community.

As for Civ being "the same game with better graphics" each time, yes, up until Civ3 I'd be inclined to agree. However, Civ4 had quite a few differences, and Civ5 looks even more radical.

so i finally played it and i must say - THUMBS DOWN. the game feels dumbed down, kind of like civ for playstation or something. this feeling comes from the interface, which does not feel very powerful but rather simplified. the city screen - totally don't like it - too simple, also don't like the "buy a square with culture" business. the map view - doesn't give you a good view of your empire, just large city labels. the most annoying feature? - one unit per square (sorry, hex). they could have made it a maximum of at least two, or maybe every unit has an occupancy value and the total count may not exceed X but up to that you can have as many units as you can fit. I like the new artillery rules and I like the X units per iron(or other resource), though one is too few. i wish some changes to combat in Civ 4 could be implemented, but aside from that Civ 4 still gets my vote.

Well I bought it.

Now I'm just waiting the requisite decade before I can actually play the damn thing as it's run through Steam.

I really hate Steam with a vengeance. I have no use for it, but games insist on "activating" through it and updating before I can actually play them. Then I have to jump through hoops to get a SINGLE PLAYER game to run when I'm not connected to the internet. While on that subject, WHY should I need a 'net connection to "activate" a SINGLE PLAYER game? Oh yes, because it stops piracy, except that it doesn't.

I miss the days of just installing a game and getting to play it right off the bat...

Anyone know how to get past the intro. movie? If I click the escape button it still runs until the old guy says "welcome back, my son".

It takes at least that long before I can skip the intro on my PC. It's likely that it loads the video for you to watch while it loads the next stuff in the background so you're not just sitting there with a "loading" screen. I see it more and more with games these days.

It's so addictive once you actually get to the game. Maybe it's just because it's new but it seems "just one more turn..." is more present than usual. Loving it so far.
