May have a chance to go moose hunting this fall if we draw a tag. I've never hunted these critters before. I can handload darn near anything. The calibers we have available are: My wife's .308 win, My .280 rem, My sav. M99 300sav (camp/brush rifle) and possibly an M44 mosin or 8mm 24/47 that my cousin would use. My cousin and wife will be close quarters hunters, I would like the ability to reach out a bit more with the 280.

I'm pretty much sold on the 175 Swift A-frame for the .280, and the M44 really loves the Hor. 174 SP which is a proven north country moose killer in the enfield and should work equally well in the M44. The one I can't decide on is what to use for the .300 sav and .308. It will have to be 180 grains and relatively blunt to serve both rifles. I'm considering the Norma Oryx or Lapua Mega as these are probably designed for Scandinavian moose in 308 class calibers. The Nosler Part. is a bit long for the savage. Any other ideas? I'm especially interested in first hand experience on moose or elk. My fallback choice would be the Hor. 180 rn or Win. power point, but for a once in a lifetime hunt I'm definately open to using something more exotic. I think the Norma 196 Oryx or the Nosler 200 gr Partition would be great in the 8mm.

Not sure how helpful I can be, but here are a couple ideas. First, for the .300 savage, how about the 170 grain Barnes X designed for the 30-30? For the .308, how about the Barnes TSX in 165 grain or the 180 if you are stuck on that weight. After killing two large elk with 180 Barnes X bullets, I'm a believer! Complete pass through penetration with excellent wound channels. Both went down promptly. Those killed at about 50 yards with a K31 and an MV of 2600 fps.

Not a fan of the Win power point. :( I and my son in law used win 150 PP in .270 for antelope year before last. Both quartering away shots. His about 80 yards and mine about 280 yards. Both bullets blew and failed to exit. Sudden death on antelope, but left me wondering about penetration on larger game. We were using 150 grainers because elk were on the schedule for the following weekend but chose not to use them, opting for Nosler Part instead.

Hope that helps

Barnes Triple X---Maine Moose took about 4 steps and dropped when done in by Barnes XXX in 200 grain from a .300 WM at 200 yds.--bullet passed thru and left heck of a channel

X bullets are too long for the Savage. The guys on the Nosler board steered me towards the 165 partition for both rifles and the 200 gr part. for 8mm. Interesting to hear about the Win PP. I used to use them in my own .308 before I got into reloading and they always passed through with good results. Maybe they ain't what they used to be. Was hoping some of our Scandinavian readers could chime in on the Norma or Lapua slugs. They fit the shape I'm looking for perfectly in the .30 cals.

The bullet I was thinking about for the 300 Savage was on this page;

http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/rifle/tsx-bullet/

I think I refered to it as a 170 grain bullet but it is a 150. Maybe a bit light for the moose. The weight retention factor of the Barnes does however put it in a heavier class than comparable bullets. OTOH, as a long time afficionado of the Partition, I think it a very good choice.

I don't shoot 300 savage, but did once load ammo for a friend with 180 partitions and he dropped a large cow elk where it stood.
