I was thinking about how much I love to see the work that members have done on their stocks with the help of the post that I do. :D
So here is your chance to show off the work you have done. Lets see some pic's and tell me a little about the work you did.

Geez candyman, you already know how much "CANDY" has gone into these three projects. There are plenty of pics of "Candy Influence" on the threads I've started. And I've only just begun. Without your help and that of many other members I could have been hopelessly lost.

Let's hear it for the candyman! =D>

Here's some of my work for ya'll to gander at. I guess I could call it "Gunfreaks victims"

My 71/84 project

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Fast forward 45 days and a few hundred dollars later.....

Image

Image

Image

Doublestack's Beaumont stock that was cracked in two...

Image

Image

Image

Fast forward to the finished repairs and my refinish job...

Image

Image

Where did the seam go?

Image

Image

Image

Nepalese Martini Francotte buttstock from IMA. This buttstock belonged to a member on Gunboards, he wanted me to complete the repairs but leave it unfinished as he wished to do the finishing himself.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

My carcano restoration. First pic is the sportered rifle, next picture is the restored rifle. Fitted a new a stock, installed bayonet lug, repaired and cleaned up any buggered screws, refitted buttplate, reblued steel, polished bolt.

Image

Image

My IMA untouched Gahendra.....

Image

Image

Image

My gew 88 project. Probably the nastiest project i've ever tackled...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I have since then added the correct cleaning rod as well..

Image

My M91/41 Carcano.

Image

After a little magic...

Image

M44 stock

Image

After adding my handcarved toe....

Image

All finished up...

Image

Simple repair, stock belonged to Doublestacked here on the forums.

Image

Image

2 Snider stocks I just made a post about earlier....

Here's the long rifle. It didn't need much repair work, just a good cleaning.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Cleaned and refinished....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And now here's the short stock in all it's untouched dirt.

You can see the chipped toe and broken piece near the lock inletting.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Cleaned, repaired and refinished....

Image

Image

Here's the repaired toe

Image

Small repair, the wood was crushed in here.

Image

Luckily the part that broke off near the lock area was included with the stock when he shipped it to me. Simply glassed it back on and filled any seams with dyed resin to hide them.

Image

The wood here was rotted away at the top, it's pretty thin in this area so I spliced on a new piece. I made a similar repair on the left side but it was a lot smaller.

Image

That's about it for now. There's some work i've done but forgot to take pictures of, so I'll never be able to post it here. Currently I am working on this Brunswick musket for forum member Murvihill here. It will be a pretty easy cleanup and repair job, just time consuming. Was going to work on it today but the wind decided to blow like heck and the rain clouds are knocking at our door.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Still need to get to Lee's (candyman's) M1 Carbine stock..

Image

I also have a Martini Henry stock set from IMA in Untouched condition that I am hoping to complete in the next few days. I also have 5 Finnish Nagant stocks that Eric (preachere) sent to me, am currently working on the last stock so when everything is done I will be posting it all here.

I am sure there are a few I left out.....

Great work guys and thinks for the kind words.
But this post is not about me. It's about the work that ya'll have done. And from what has been posted so far, I can say that the things I have posted have been well used.

Harold
Your stock looks great. I missed your orignal post on the work.
The stickies I do will walk you through the work. Most are set up to teach basic skills. The post on refinishing can be altered to change the out come.
Here is a tip on stains. When using an alcohol base stain with oil. The longer you let it dry, the darker the color you will get. When using an oil base stain after 30 min. the stock will not get much darker. The only thing that will happen is that the stain will dry on the surface. When you apply an oil finish finish, some of the dried stain it will come off.
Keep those pic's coming. :D

Here are four of my five Gew 88s. They were full of cracks, splits and missing bits!
My goal was to return the missing chunks of wood but not to return them to original. I like the dings, dents and dirt for these old guns.

Damn fine work, I made many similar repairs to my Gew 88 as well. Would love to pickup another cheap parts gun for fun but I just can't find em anymore.

I learned everything I know about oil finishes from your posts, Candyman. :)

Here's an AK stockset I have underway.

Before (well, actually, after stripping):

and after (well, actually, underway):
Image

That's after one coat of BLO. I was trying for a Russian Red look but with an oil finish instead of shellac (mostly 'cause i have BLO and don't have shellac).

What's interesting about this stock is that the darker areas are naturally occuring - usually them seem to be from soaked-in Cosmoline, but this stock hardly had any Cosmo in deep. I have no idea about the type of wood, either. I assumed it was beech, but it sure doesn't look like it after stripping.

I did a Candyman Three Step Stain finish on this Yugo 24/47:

I was very happy with how this one turned out.

Thanks for the advice, Lee (and everyone else)!

Tony

Here's a few refinish projects Gunny had a hand in. Either by a how-to thread, pm, or phone conversation:

Surface crack at the tang on this 24/47. The crack was about 1 inch long so I drilled a 3/16 hole from the tang end staying about 3/8 inch under the surface. After drilling and having clean wood to inspect I determined the crack was surface only. The top of the hole showed the crack line, the bottom did not.

Image

The plan was to use resin, fiberglass and a wood dowel but I didn't have a piece of dowel the size I needed but did have some carbon fiber tubing. Here is the tube and resin filled hole.

Image

After three hours dry time I used a rotary tool to finish back to the original wood. The steel tang sleeve happens to be .354, that's the size of a "T" letter drill so I has able to drill to the exact size needed. Here it is ready for assembly.

Image

I think a few coats of BLO on the crack area well make it near invisible.

Madcratebuilder, how deep did you drill your dowel hole? Did you go the inch or so length of the crack?

I have a Finn 28/30 in a similar situation and am trying to learn the ways of the force.

For a crack like that you'd want to drill down about about 1 inch further than the length of the crack to be sure your cutting the crack's travel off.

I have some more pictures of work I'll be posting soon.

RC k98k (duv 42) after removing shellac and giving it a thorough BLO bath as taught on this forum:
Image

Found a few interesting marks in the stock after the heavy shellac came off, too. :thumb:

Cleaned and oiled per posts from da Candyman:
Image

K31 mix master. Bought as a barreled action. Rescued a stock with several chunks missing out of it. Unfortunately I did have to sand the butt end a bit, but I'll get the buttplate refitted to it later. The only thing that annoyed me on this one was my color matching attempt was off for the repair piece. Oh well.. it's shellac. I can try again the next time it annoys me enough.
