Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Ricekilla! That's the name! Now if we flood him with PMs he might return and update us on whatever he's been doing since the old forum went south. Should be hilarious.

Whats better than a 1861 Colt Navy kit ? Image

A free 1861 Colt Navy kit -- Image

One of our older members was cleaning out her dead son's safe and found this -- untouched CVA kit --

The odd law here is - its leagle for anyone over 21 yrs. to own & possess a black powder pistol --- but --- if you merely have - "all" - the means to fire it --- caps / powder / balls -- then you must have a handgun license --

Doing a quick check of the parts -- I'm missing the back-strap -- in the parts list -- its a $50. part ( in 1980 :xeye: ) -- so much - "for free" -- Image

Her son must have tossed all the parts in a bag with rocks & gave it a real good shake once a week -- this will take a crap load of cleaning / polishing --

I lightly cleaned up the bottom of the trigger guard to the frame -- now there happy together -- and started on the sides -- the trigger guard stuck out about 1/2 credit card thickness on both sides --

Worse side --

Getting there --

The chatter rings in the barrel are gonna be fun to smooth out

I received an e-mail from the woman I gots this from -- she searched all over the place -- no back-strap -- sooooooooooooooo --

https://vtigunparts.com/store/shopdi...ption,%20ccode

Still -- not to bad for a free pistol ?

This missing part & a stripped out screw hole for the mainspring was probably why Allen never put this together ? --

Fudging up a screw that's close -- the action is very tight -- but it all works --

Now off to the only Ace hardware on Crap-Island that has gun screws -- once I find the next size up & the correct bottoming tap -- I'm in business --

Whats that I hear in the kitchen ? --

Why its Mrs. Nugget -- wondering why I stopped playing with her --

Very first screw I try installing -- is way stiff ------ using the screw itself as a tap w/ cutting oil -- in-out -- in-out -- it goes in much easier ( she said that ? ) -- then with the hammer installed -- super stiff --

Sooooooooooooooooo -- before I drill out the hole in the hammer a little larger -- #600G cloth --

Image

Purrr-fict --

Dry -- right at 3 lbs. -- I can live with that for now

^^^ Already in my favorites

First problem -- it would go to 1/2 cock -- and that was it --- no full lock to fire ---- apparently the hand ( paw ) was to long --- sooo --

Image

Doesn't look like much - but I filled it from .975 over all length down to .95 & 1/2 - ish --- the top of it was binding --

And while I was in there --- where the bolt rubs the inner frame -- polished --

Image

The bolt itself was filed & polished - but just where it sticks above into the frame - filled back a bit & polished -- and the side of the fork like thingy was cleaned up so it slides over the hammer cam e-z-er --

Trigger --

This is where it rides on the hammer --

Image

Notch for 1/2 cock --

Image

That little nub under that is the firing sear shelf -- both hammer & trigger look worse than any Mosin I've seen --- so sand / buff / polish --

Image

That red square is where the between the nipples safety pin would be --- but this cylinder don't have any -- its the - "Pull the fired cap off and foul up everything notch" - AKA - "Cap Sucker" -- so when I polish & paint it --- J-B weld time --

And my new back-strap came in today --

Image

And of course It will take 3 days of fitting & blending --

Image

Image

Going for no parting lines --

Image

Grip fitting --

Image

Image

I got rid of those sharp edges at the base -- fits my hand better --

Maybe a little contouring ?

One coat Minwax Dark Walnut #2716 / 8 + hour dry / #0000 buff / another coat / dry / #0000 buff / first lite coat of polly :D

Image

What ever kind of wood this is -- nice grain :D

And my spare showed up Image

Image

Interesting -- when I just looked at this pic -- the pin screws in -- mine is a loose press fit ?

At some point I gotta stop trying to polish what isn't there -- I work down one imperfection in the casting - two more pop up

And Its hard to put back wood that wasn't there to begin with --- if it was worth it - I've carve one out from a chunk of Maple :D

After a finale polish / clean up -- "it is what it is" --

Image

Up next -- "Barrel spinning"

Image

Maybe the cylinder too -- I cant tell the difference between the ships and scratches

Love the grain on the grips. My ASM Navy doesn't even have the engraving on the cylinder.

From what I'm learning -- a real or repro -- 1861 Navy only came in 36 cal. and the grip isn't correct either -- so this 44 cal. whatever griped -- is a -- "Ricekila Special"

Whats really funny -- I cant find B/P single action kits -- Now when I go to the 3 gun shows on Crap-island -- ( thats right -- 3 per year  ) -- I'm gonna buy every old CVA ( ASM ) kit I can find

The new board experienced some sort of a crash so they used their latest backup file which was somewhere around August 2 or 3 I think. They are working on trying to restore the missing posts. That's about all I know.
