Sad day because of G33/40

Post by M67 »

My friend told me, that they found an old short rifle in their old family house. His grandfather was a hunter. He prommised me that he will give me that rifle. And today finnaly I received Bubbaised G33/40. Everything is matching but wood is "transformed" in an ugly form.
I am happy and sad at the same time. Dot 1942. Now I have big issue in front of me. Is it possible to find an ugly but correct wood, front parts and rod?

Here in Slovenia mission impossible.

Now that is some surface rust. How does it look under the wood?? Is the bolt locked up?? How is the bore?? Any idea where this was stored??

The rifle was hidden for many years under the stairs in the building. The rust and the dry layer of dirt were immediately removed with ballistic. The barrel is very good.
You will see the next series of photos and you will be surprised.

I am more and more satisfied. Especially after Balistol and WD40 bathing and treatment.

That looks like a great project.
There are posts on electrolysis which may clean the metal work up a little more.
To find the correct furniture may take a while but will be worth it.
Another one to be saved.

SOME YEARS BACK a friend called me about a German gun at a yard sale . Not a gun guy . I found a very decent G 33-40 . BUT the barrel had been cut by
a vandal from the bottom of the stock up to almost half way thru the barrel, the wood and bands were gone . I gave almost nothing for it and sold off the sights
and what was left of the stock . THE worst was when I looked at the cut and it was ragged and bright . had been done . very recently . The barrelled action went to friend to build a very fine sporter . I still weep

Are the stock markings still intact?

Unfortunately, there's nothing out there. The hole is closed- filled, the stock is thinner and shortened.

Nice find! And it even has the unique & elusive & spendy front sight hood! It looks like you are going to have a search & rescue mission for parts, but, they are out there. Can't wait until you are done and shooting it.

Question. I have some of the G33-40 carbines with sectioned stocks. Some with 2 splices, a few with 3 Appeared to be solid, not laminated. Designed to prevent warping ??
or a shortage of decent stock blanks?

At this point, you're limited as to what you want it to be.

Original? No. You could piece stuff back into a whole and have a'representative' example, but it will never be back to how it started. From there, your option are sell as-is, piece it back together, or leave it in it's present state.
