Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Not a Universal ????

#1 Post by Candyman » Sun Jun 11, 2017 6:50 pm

Not long ago I spotted a M1 Carbine on the rack at a local shop. The guy at the counter said that it was a Universal with an IBM barrel.
I asked to have a look at it and this is what I saw.

The barrel markings were worn but I could make out the flaming boom and the letters OOD. It was not an IBM barrel.

The top of the recever had what looked like the military markings.

It had the adjustable rear sight and I couldn't see the manufactuer name, but I could see the first two letters on the left side of the sight UN. When I looked on the right side of the sight I could see the letters OOD.
It has been a long time since I saw the TV show Wheel of Furtune, but I still know how to play the game. UN_ _ _ _OOD, add DERW and you have UNDERWOOD.
Image

I do my best to never pay the asking price on a used gun. So I asked what he could do on the price. He said he would let me have it for $450 out the door.
So I bought it.

Here are a few more pics.

It is a Universal, but not a Universal Firearms. It is a WWII subcontracted receiver made by Universal Windings for Underwood.
ONLY ~380,000 of the ~6,000,000 total manufactured carbines were made by UNDERWOOD with a receiver subcontracted by one of six subcontractors.
S/N range assigned to these subcontracted receivers; 2352520 - 2732519
Subcontractor marks; B S T W WTA WWA

I think if this happened to me I'd rush out and buy a lotto ticket that same day.

Very very unsafe contractor! I am worried about your safety so sell it to me and you will be ok.

It seems many of your purchases are from pawn shops and thats pretty cool. I stopped checking pawn shops around here a long time ago. There just never seems to be anything or its marked up to new prices. The flea markets were good to me but that was many years ago.
Nice pick up , congrats .

Nice when the retailer doesn't know what he has. It worked out well for you.

What a great find!
Soak the painted recoil plate in WD-40. It will get under the paint and soften it and not hurt the original Parkerized finish. The paint should slough right off.

There are three pawn shops and two gun stores within 10 miles of my house. I have found that you need to hit the pawn shops weekly to find deals.

Great find! It's definitely hit or miss but some of my favorite rifles were found in pawn shops!

This is true. We get good deals at shows if they are at the end of the month so people can pay bills.

Always jealous of these lucky finds and scores. I have never been that lucky and gave up on ever finding something like that. I still check but I never get my hopes up.

Nice carbine!

I have had some good luck with pawnshops in my area. Sporters are cheap right now. . . .
