Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.
Survival Situation
Re: Survival Situation
"It has already proven itself in the ultimate survival situation."
Meaning the Garand in combat?

Re: Survival Situation
It proved itself in WW2 and Korea, yes, but it will be outmatched with someone with an AR15 or AK variant. You fire 8 rounds and you miss and the other guy with an AR15 or AK fires 8 rounds at the same time and misses, the other guy doesn't have to reload, he just has to pull the trigger while you're reloading.
Re: Survival Situation
Clint Eastwood proved Garand in Grand torino.
»You're a disgrace. I'd like to know how you got to be a Captain, anyway. »Yossarian: »You promoted me.« Colonel Cathcart: » That has got nothing to do with it.«
Re: Survival Situation
No, I fire one round and then wait to see if there are more targets. You fire 8 rounds and you miss
Frequently wrong, never in doubt.
Re: Survival Situation
I'd take the garand over a firing from the hip ak anyday
Re: Survival Situation
In the end, it's hits that count. A tuned Garand (some simple steps) can be very accurate. Replacement gas plugs allow the use of whatever .30-06 ammo you can find, it's plentiful in hunting loads. The weight and gas operation really moderate recoil. In a SHTF situation, prolonged pitched battles for the "activated citizens" would be unlikely in favor of guerilla activity.

Re: Survival Situation
I've got a Mossberg .22 that I tweaked and a ton of ammo. It's light weight and the ammo is compact and light. Not near as good as the Garand's 30-06, but dang all that would get heavy after a while!

Re: Survival Situation
My CMP Special is actually about a pound less than the other Garands I've weighed. I live in a repressive "ten rounds only" leftist state, so i's now my SHTF rifle. Note that a proficient person can reload it faster than replacing an "evil" box magazine, so I don't feel too handicapped. The 30-06 will also deal effectively with whatever I need to use it on, and is readily available. I'll get one of the gas plugs that allow factory hunting ammo since I won't be launching rifle grenades (also banned here anyway, even inert).
