Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Polytech SKS Hunter Question

#1 Post by MauserMadness » Tue Jan 16, 2018 10:39 am

So I picked up a Polytech SKS Hunter, it has a very broken stock. I don't know who to go with to repair it and be happy with it or just send it on down the road.
First Question - anyone know a reputable stock repair guy? The Hunter Stock is a Monte Carlo stock that is different than all the rest. If I keep it I would want it to be correct.
Second Question - if I can't be happy with it repaired or the price it takes to repair it, what would be a reasonable price to try and sell it for? it is in the 00050-00060 Serial Number range and in good shape minus the very brokenness of the stock.

Bonus Story: Reason the stock was broken is, as I quote the previous owner, "there were 6 coons in the barn, and the damn gun only holds 5 bullets"

Cheers

Great story about the break.

I'd check with Candyman, on this forum: I expect he'd be able to talk you through the process of repairing that break so that the gun will function--and look almost as good as it did before.

Good luck with the project, if you decide to go that way.

I'll have to see about messaging Candyman and seeing how in depth the fix would be to get her right. The wood is severely splintered.

PAX as far as offing it, I don't even know where to start, the old SRF had a for sale board? I saw something about a for sale group on here? Don't want to be posting in the wrong place.

Time to use that forum search function for answers!

You need "X" number of posts to access the WTB/WTS/WTT. PM me if it's not going to be a project you want to start. Should be OK as I asked you. Good luck any way you go. PAX

That's how I feel. I used to be big into woodworking but as splintered as this stock is, and it's unique Finnish, I feel like I would be disappointed and selling it anyway with a botched repair job that couldn't be undone.

Sadly I need a Hunter Stock. I dropped it off at a gunsmith to see what kind of magic he can work.
Fingers crossed it comes out half decent. Just saw that one went on gunbroker in November for $905

Could hardly believe that.

I'm still on "damn gun only holds 5 rounds" - last time I checked the SKS holds 10 - or is this a limited mag of some kind?

I'm in OH as well, if you decide you want to get rid of it, we can talk

You can do a lot of magic with repairs but where that stock broke and the way it is splintered, I don't think there is a reliable fix. Even coring it with a strong dowel I don't see enough wood on the receiver end to mate the two pieces. i would think your best best is looking for a replacement stock. Good luck with it and let us know what the gunsmith says.
