Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

1873 Springfield Trapdoor

#1 Post by trevorlang14 » Sun Jul 15, 2018 12:49 pm

I recently purchased an 1873 Trapdoor and the things that I've read on it don't seem to not be correct. There is no cartouche on it so I assume it was factory refurbished at some point. The rifle has a 31 below the trigger guard which not sure if this is a unit mark or something along those lines. It still has the US marked butt plate and U marked sling mounts. The breech is just marked 1873 and not US model 1873. The serial number is 285770. Any information on this rifle would be greatly appreciated if I need to post another picture I will!

I looked up your serial number and my google sources says it was made in 1885. I have a ramrod bayonet version made in 1891 myself. Do check TRAPDOORCOLLECTOR.COM for more information. The site does have some insight for looking for fakes with pictures showing the proper heat treat.

Best Regards,
