Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Portugese M 1904/39 Striker Spring

#1 Post by Cattus Borealis » Sun Feb 24, 2019 9:06 pm

Hello Everyone,

I was recently given a beautiful Portuguese Mauser-Verigiero in 8x57.

Will the striker spring would exchange with a standard 1898 Large Ring Mauser spring? I have taken the bolt apart and I think they are close but I want to make sure.

The spring seems a little slow and I would like to improve the lock time on it.

Thank You!

I replaced the spring on my Verigiero with one I got from Wolfe. You may need to call or email them to get the right one. If you have trouble assembling the bolt shoot me a PM and I will share a video with you on how it is done. Bit of a trick to it. A frustrated owner once said its a bolt that you can take apart in 9 min but it takes 9 months to assemble it.

Wolf is always great, but shipping for just one spring is the same for 10. Therefore it is best to get a spare for each style of rifle you collect.

This shows that nasty bolt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffmNeikQfM0

The bolt is also detailed and shown in, A Collectors Guide To MILITARY RIFLES: Disassembly And Reassembly by Stuart C. Mowbray & Joe Puleo 2007 by Mowbray Publishing company. An excellent paperback book, see pages 189-194 for a Vergueiro. The bolt is on page 194. This is a 1904 dated Mauser Vergueiro. Recently this type of Portuguese mauser in some odd 6.5 ammo was at the Puchie show West Bend WI at $300. All matching, but someone shellacked the stock so I passed due to a messed up stock and odd ball ammo.

An odd duck. It had a nice crest. Others that want to see this oddball see

To old to fight and to old to run, a Jar head will just shoot and be done with you.

Thank you again! I plan on buying a good selection of springs.

I did not find the bolt too hard to reassemble...I used a old 2x4 block to recock it. This spring I am planning to change out a bunch of springs on my shooters. I have found that replacing springs has helped with tightening groups (at least for me.)

I have more than my share of mausers and I do have to say the Vergueiro's bolt is like ice sliding on glass. Has the smoothest action of any other mauser I own. I would include my Persian and Swedish Mausers into that collection.

Here is another shot of the Portuguese M 1904/39 along with some other guns I have been shooting. I really enjoy shooting this rifle.

Howdy Folks,

Wolff Gunsprings delivered! I used a standard 98 Mauser 24 pound spring for my rifle. It fits perfect.
