yeah.. you can't have great graphics when you're free to run around on half of western europe. :D

Its my favorite mmo game.. too bad I'm on satelite internet with a crapbox computer now :( haven't played in a few months

edit: btw chaunsey (I spaced out about the "ww2 shooter" thread a while back) my handle is "Erkorene".

I play mostly axis. about 70%-30% between german and british since my axis squad fell apart.

I'm moving to a new house in the same town here where I live and once I get set up I'm gonna beg and maybe sell a gun to get a decent computer and start playing again. I think WWIIOL crack is worse than milsurpitis.

and way out there, but could you please PM me some screens of the new lee enfield (and sights)? my good computer broke down 2 days before it came in

This is the best game I have found that has something more to offer than the usual deathmatch,
team deathmatch kind of gameplay. With the size of the game, if it had all the super high end
graphics nobody`s computer would be able to run it.
There are layers to this game that many newer players may not know about, such as the
HC ( high command ) the game is controlled by the players. RDP ( research, development, and production ) that brings new weapons
into the game. Strategic Bombing, that slows down the other sides RDP.
This a very complex game that should be given a chance. The key word for today is GAMEPLAY.

Digging up an old post but I absolutely love WWIIOL as well. Been playing off and on since about 2004. Usually as French under the same handle SVT40.

It has got to be the best WWII tank sim I've played. No hit points or power ups just the capabilities of the vehicle you are in and you own skill.

Seems as though they have a new graphics engine coming soon so I may go check it out again. Anyone else still playing it?

Gameplay rules over graphics any time.

Our favourite LAN games are Day Of Defeat Classic, which sits on top of CounterStrike or Half-Life, which in turn was built on the Quake (1, NOT II or III) engine. The graphics are more than good enough, but because it runs such low spec PCs, anyone can join in.

Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, with custom maps and skins, and Call Of Duty (1) with custom maps (both Quake III engine) are also popular for their low system requirements.

AT,

While I agree with you, I have to say WWIIOL is the exception, the ground war graphics was incredibly oudated. The CRS people that developed WWIIOL had used a grapics engine that pre dated "Warbirds" by ICI which came out in 1996. Personally I feel this update is long over due. I look forward to checking it out when it gets rolled out...cya there :)

thats not actually true becuase the graphics engine was built by them between 99 and 01.

and they have been updating it constantly, most of the buildings have been 3d for a while now, and the forests and brush have been 3d and quite excellent for a few years now. while it will always be behind the big name games, its a necessary trade off to do what they do.

the new weather and ragdoll effects are looking pretty cool, but the actual gameplay changes are what matter most, and there are some of those too, though this update is more concentrated on graphics.

i may have to resub soon and give it a whirl, its been a while.

Hmmmm I heard that the engine was built by one of the CRS programmers while he was still at Warbirds, it was never intended for WWIIOnline but when a few of them broke off and formed CRS, he happened to have the engine near completetion because he had been working on it for a few years before hand, so they used it. I got that info from a CRS employee I was kinda friends with at the time, if its wrong, I blame him lol. At any rate, I still plan on checking it out in a few weeks when I get some time to sit down and learn the game again.

its true they came from warbirds, i cant speak about any work they had done while still at warbirds, but i really dont think the engine predates warbirds.

while warbirds certainly dates back to the mid 90's the game was continually updated, and infact warbirds 3 was released after WWII online i believe.

so the CRS guys were still on the warbirds crew around 98-99 i believe, thats still a decade back, which is practically forever in the video game world, but certainly not 96 era, it was XP compatible from the start for example, so its not like a windows 98 game retrofitted or something, and quite a few years ago already they had updated the game API to directx 9.

either way, the past is the past, and the new stuff is looking pretty damn amazing.

i mean look at these screen shots, not amazing compared to the latest call of duty or whatever, but considering that those are shoebox games, and that WWIIOL has this level of graphics in a game that has much of the western front modeled as a single giant half scale map with no loading at all and all players on one big server, and a view distance many times longer than most shooters. well, i'd say its pretty impressive, especially considering that it is an over 8 year old game.
