Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

My ammo for the 380 looks the same as the 9x18 !

Took out some ammo for my 380 and for the Makarov 9x18 and side by side it looks exactly the same. Thought the Makarov round had much more power.

9mm Makarov(9x18mm) is only marginally higher in velocity than 380acp(9x17mm). The Makarov maybe around 100 fps faster. The Makarov has a larger diameter bullet than the 380 and is not interchangeable. 9x18 ultra or police is a different round than the Makarov also but very rare to come across.

Thanks,
So my Makarov's for a carry pistol, aren't much better than my 380.

Both rounds where made for a blow back pistol design, meaning only spring tension holds the slide in battery while firing. The Makarov round is getting close to max ability for a pistol of that design. A round with more power would need a locking lug of some sort to delay blow back or a super heavy recoil spring. So both rounds have similar limitations because of pistol design.

You can see “power” by just looking at a cartridge?

What am I thinking right now???

Doesn't a larger round have more power than a smaller one?

That's what I'm thinking.

Looks can be deceiving. The 9mm Steyr pistol round utilizes a 23mm case length and is obviously larger/longer than the 19mm case length as used in 9mm Luger/Parabellum rounds but the latter is the (slightly) more powerful of the two. Other similar comparisons exist as well.

As it turns out, Hornady Critical Defense ammo in either .380 or 9x18 is available and is among the best self defense ammo for either caliber, so we can compare apples with apples. Both have muzzle velocities listed at 1,000 fps as cited by Hornady, but the Makarov round uses a 95 grain HP bullet compared to a 90 grain HP bullet for the .380 loading. So... with a 5% heavier bullet and an extra .009" of diameter, the 9x18 is technically the superior round but by so small a margin as to be insignificant.

In the arena of maximum concealability then .380 pistols like the Ruger LCP and Kel-Tec P380 win over the Com-bloc counterparts as no ultra compact pistols for 9x18 are made, at least to the best of my knowledge. FEG made alloy-frame 9x18 pistols that were at least lighter in weight, and about the same size as a Makarov pistol, but nowhere near the 8 ounce weights of the ultra compact pistols. Of course some people view heft as a desirable attribute and they are not necessarily wrong. Different strokes and all that but .380 and 9x18 ammo paper ballistics are pretty much identical. Shot placement is the real winner of that argument, on my planet at least.

Thanks bob ! My Bersa 380 and P64 are about the same size, and have Hornady Critical defense for both. P64 is heavier, and European mag release on the P64 is more awkward. Bersa has more round capacity @ 8
Really don't mind the double action trigger pull on the P64. 8-) Reminds me of my Nagant revolver.
