Aguila Super Extra .22 LR ammunition review

NM MILSURPS held a .22LR match out to 150 yards today. I was using my Mauser single shot trainer with a 4 power Fecker scope.
For the first time I shot the Aguila Super Extra 40 gain High Velocity HP ammo. All I can say is WOW! I had been shooting Winchester and Remington bulk boxed ammo and thought it was good stuff. They cannot hold a candle to the Aguila SE ammo. The ammo shot so well that I won the match. Targets hit went down hard and my bullets struck very close to my point of aim. The burnt powder has a strange odor but is very clean burning.
If you have a chance to try this ammo, do it. You may be very impressed with its performance.

Congrats on the win and thanks for the heads-up on the ammo. I bought some last year just to stock up but haven't tried it yet. Several of my semi-auto pistols are quite picky about what they like so I try to keep a variety on hand.

Hi Rob,

The hyperlink in your post points to the Aguila Super Extra standard velocity 40 gr solid lead bullet. This is one of the ammo selections that the CMP sold in bulk for target shooters up until the last 22 ammo drought. It is great. I've used it in competition in NRA sporterifle for several years. It's the best ammo I can find for the money.

Rob: Was that high velocity "HP" you were shooting? I thought they were solid 40gr.

Sure did shoot good!

Aguila used to be good, but dirty. Sounds like they cleaned up their act, good to know!

I think it was Shooting Times who did a big test report of 16 or so 22LR loads and they too were surprised that that same HV Aquila 22LR Ammo tested REALLY well. Best of the HV loads IIRC.

I've been shooting Aguila ammo for over 10 years. Their 30 grain super high velocity suffers in accuracy, and the 60 grain sub-sonic tends to keyhole through the normal 16 twist rimfires, so I've not been impressed with their exotic stuff. HOWEVER, their standard velocity, and high velocity ammo has always given me excellent accuracy, and I believe it's as good or much better than any comparably priced .22 rimfire out there. After thousands of rounds I have never had a single one that felt inconsistent (squib or overcharged).

I have a 5 round 100 yard group that measures 1.3" ctc. 3 of those round were clover-leafed. That was using a scoped Marlin 795 rested on a range bag.

I have another target fired at 50 yards through a 75 year old Winchester 69A with a peep sight off of sand bags. That one is 5 rounds with a spread of 1/2".

The list goes on, but you get the picture. I'm sold on the stuff. My preference is is the 40 gr RNHV. Good stuff.

Congrats on your match Rob, and glad you discovered it.
