Reloadind 30-06 ap

Post by Hippycrowe »

I bought 700 .308 Ap bullets and 100 orange tracers for $150 at the show. What is a good load using Imr 4064 with these 163 grain bullets

Start with 47.5 grains. 52 is max. The AP bullet with its machine turned core is very accurate. If you plan to do any kind of penetration test, don't waste you time with any targets closer than 200 yards. The bullet is not stable. At 200 plus yards the bullet will sail through most steels and even AR500.
I have fired thousands of rounds of AP over the years and have done extensive test out to 600 yards with steel up to 2 1/2 inches thick which the bullet passed right through.

Damn that's something from an '06 round - holy cow, had no idea it was capable of THAT much penetration!

Man, you sure have some fun shootin' ... makes me wish I lived closer to you. Who lives better than you ... ?

There is no real secret,it is just the bullet must be stable in flight. After 600 feet, the bullet is stable and with the AP core ( Tungsten or hardened steel) the core will carry a tremendous amount of energy since it will not shatter or break when it strikes a hard target. It will either stick into a heavy steel target or bounce off if it has slowed down enough at long range.
At distance closer than 600 feet (200 yards) it does not perform well at all. It wants to tumble when it hits a hard target.
I was able to find a few photos that were not lost when the site crashed. This was a hardened steel oil tank access cover that weights about 350 pounds and is 2 1/2" thick. The cover is "dished" and the bullets had to cope with not only the curve of the trejectory, but the cover as well. Angle was about 50 degrees.
The bullets were fired by me from a M-1917 shot from the prone with open sights. As you can see the bullet was very accurate and grouped well. The sound of the bullet striking was a dull thud rather than a normal "ringing" as a lead core will do. Some cores were found buried a couple of feet in the dirt berm and none had so much as a scratch on them.
500 yards.

I have results of several test from 200-800 yards as well. I do not want to hijack this post.

That's some crazy penetration. Do you know what kind of velocity you're getting out of those loads?
