Help With Leather

Post by Phantom 778 »

I purchased a new, unlikely issued, Finnish green leather sling off eBay. It came with the oval style buckle and the leather just barely fit. In fact, it really didn't. Here is the end result. Can amyone give me some suggestions on how to clean the rough edges back up? Kind of disappointing to install a new sling and already have it damaged before its first shouldering.

My original post was viewed 20 times and not one answer... Anyways, I fixed it myself with a little bit of shoe polish. Here is the end result.

Very odd sling. Is that a modern reproduction? Generally the oval buckle slings are old and have very thick leather. Like a Civil War belt, Or a 1960s hippy wide belt. I mean thick. The slings are generally worn/rounded on the edges not frayed, with a nice patina to the buckle and the buckle is heavy, well cast. Even the sling tab is way new??? Where did it come from??? see example:

Is that a fiber & rubberized sling with layers?

From what I understand, based off a thread originally posted to gunboards, these slings were likely manufactured post-war using old materials. I suspect most were warehoused and eventually sold off as surplus in brand new, unissued condition. There are a few examples on eBay which is where I aquired this one. The square buckled examples fit the leather much nicer where as the round buckle cuts it too close in my opinion. The sling is leather.

I got a green square buckle sling on my M39, but the SA Mosin has got the brown sling with the sort of squared off oval buckle. It just looks older, more vintage on a Mosin for some reason. :shhh: :shhh:
