This morning I`m driving down to Pensacola to pick up a M1 from my brother in law. I haven`t seen the rifle yet so I`m excited. He got it from the DCM about twenty years ago. It`s a Springfield with a serial in the 1,110,000 range. He had it rebarreled a couple years ago? Thats about all I know for now. I`ll post pictures when I get it home.

Made it home late last night with my M1. It`s early and raining so pictures will be inside with a flash. I`m not sure what I have other than the stock looks beat to hell. But he needed the money and I wanted the rifle. Rifle is as received. What do you think? This is my first m1. Thank you.

Man you weren't kidding about the stock. I thought it couldn't be that bad till i saw the full sized pics. I'd see how she shoots before i ordered a new stock set from the cmp, or dupage. If it shoots fine, i'd get out the iron, a bowl of water and some old hand towels and start steaming out the dents. it's doable.

what year and make is the barrel? are most parts SA? or is she a mixmaster? be careful with the blacktip ammo, it's Armour piercing.
I have a couple clips myself for fun. ( think skulled zombies, etc.)..
I love my m1's... great shooters. well 2 are for sure. i had one rebarreled last may, and haven't shot it yet...

Charles, I haven`t disassembled it yet so I`m not sure about the barrel or the other parts. I`ll strip it and take some pictures. Thanks

there's nothing in that stock that wouldn't take much to liven it up like Charles says. The metal looks very good, too.

In that 4th picture, I see the darkness on the stock around the magazine well that I associate with compressed wood, having a small collection of beat to heck Garand stocks.

I see e-sarcoinc.com has $99 Garand stock sets, unfinished but that's cheap with their free shipping promotion. You'll not see decent accuracy without a good firm lockup to the stock.

Neat rifle, looks like it got re-parkerized when it was rebarreled?

Regards,
Brian in CA

Started to disassemble but can`t get the gas cylinder off. I soaked it with kroil and letting it sit. The trigger housing feels tight. I`m not sure what to do about the stock yet. Here is what I have so far.

while you got her apart , you might wanna do a "Data sheet". you can print a free copy here. http://www.thegca.org/supply-shack
As to the gas cylinder, it's supposed to be tight. I wouldn't remove unless i had to. you can clean it without taking it off the barrrel. just yuse a .45 cal pistol brush with a patch wrapped around it. unless like me, you have a .58 caliber blackpowder rifle brush. :D

Thanks everyone for the information. I think I will clean or refinish the stock for now. But I can`t get the gas cylinder to budge. Tried block of wood and soft hammer with no luck. Anyone have this problem before? Any ideas?

you are thinking right using the blockk of wood. When i put the gas cylinder on my rebarreled M1, (nos danish var barrel) it was very tight. I used the shaft, and only the shaft of a 16 oz ball peen hammer.
Again, you don't have to remove it to give it a good cleaning. Unless you are trying to remove the handguards, i;d leave it on..
good luck.

I finally got the gas cylinder off. Had to use a pulley puller. It didn`t look like it had been peened or messed with. Just real tight on a new barrel I guess. After I Removed all the wood I couldn`t find any kind of markings on the barrel ? Any way to I.D. ? I think a local gunsmith sent it off and had it rebarreled and re-parkerized. I have decided to keep the stock it came with. I cleaned it with 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits . I have three coats of BLO on it so far. I must say it sure has character.
