I. had read many captured or surrendered guns were sent to. Rock Island where they gradually vanished over time

Some that were captured at Little Big Horn and then recaptured are displayed there. The battlefield research done after the prairie fire confirmed that some of these rifles were at the RIA after forensic interpretation.

My guess is that if they were of a desirable caliber they got used!
