BORE SCOPES

Post by OLDGUNNER »

I just looked on eBay and there are a BUNCH of cheap Bore Scopes - so cheap that everyone could have one...3 to 15 dollar range. I know, I know...you only get what you pay for, BUT, if one just can't justify the 500 dollar Hawkeye....I'll ask around and try to get a new better one for maybe 15 dollars. I even have some Lucite rods around here that I bought and I thought that I would try to make some myself - but that is just one more thing that I haven't gotten around to.

I have one of the inexpensive bore scopes. They work well enough to really check the bore of a rifle.
You MUST make sure your smart phone can turn them on. Your phone must have a powered jack. Do not use the provided "free" software. It is full of Trojans.
There are several free software sites that will work.

I recently purchased a Lyman Bore Cam kit. I was VERY surprised at how
well it works. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and worth the $185 price of admission.
I would never want to be without it now.

Only two caveats. 1) Make sure your bore is CLEAN from oil and debris. You do not
want to get the camera dirty. It's too much trouble to clean. If you are careful here
you will never have to clean it. 2) Be prepared to see things you had no idea were
there. Things you can't see by lifting a barrel to the light. Some things are more
important than others. Like you can see precisely just how good your crown is.
And what condition the throat is in. Very easy to spot areas of copper fouling,
carbon build up, leading.

FWIW, those ~$15 bore scopes work slick!

My twin brother took these pictures of the bore of his 45-70 Trapdoor using one of those LED 5.5mm endoscopes that are sold on the likes of eBay and Amazon. They come with a 5' or longer cable that plugs into the USB port of your computer or laptop. There is a CD included with it, that you need to load, to allow for video or screen capture.

The focal length is a good inch or so and if placed any closer, the image is distorted. For best use, a white cloth cleaning patch or tuft of cotton ball is put down into the bore, which works well to allow the adjustable lights on the endoscope to brighten the image for best viewing.

I thought it was pretty cool! I bought a semi-rigid cable one in 5.5mm that is 2-meters long for reviewing the barrels on my muzzleloaders. It came with a 90-degree viewing mirror that actually works well!

I have Lymans Borecam too, works Great ,gives you a 90* view of the bore .The Hawkeye is probably better but much more expensive .One plus for the Borecam is that you can save photos to a SD card . All for under $200 .

My brother had a $700 Hawkeye set ... his pictures from the $15 are about the same.

I like the 2-meter long LED one I got, as some of my smoothies wear 60” barrels. I load it onto a dedicated old Google tablet w/7” display - works slick! And with instant photo capture - what you see, is what you get.
