Inconsistency of the SVT's POI has everything to do with bedding...not shifting sights or barrel warpage.

One thing I've not seen mentioned yet is that the SVT has a lot of small parts that can be easy to lose when field-stripping it (especially when taking the bolt out).

With all the problems everybody has described, it sounds like it would take a distant 2nd place against a Garand. But I would still love to have one. Semi auto using Mosin Nagant rounds couldn't be all bad, and they just look so cool. If only they weren't so expensive. If I had a really good buddy in Canada maybe I could get him to toss me one over the fence.

SVT owners, would you take one into battle?
I would take an SVT-40 over any one of the WWII bolt rifles, yes.

I would not take an SVT-40 over an M1 due to the fact that M1s are heartier, simpler to maintain in the field and have better sights.

Given all of the post WWII choices available, no, the SVT-40 would not be my rifle of choice.

FWIW, I own 6 SVT-40s and 15 M1s ... but I think that the SVTs are more fun.

I think there are worse weapons out there but there are alot better rifles there. If you are able to keep it reasonably clean I dont think it would let you down.

Now would you take a PSL-54 to war? How would it rate against a SVT?

The PSL if I remember correctly is actually a tad heavier than the SVT which you would never guess as the PSL looks light and sleak and the SVT bulky.

I have had just as many issues with the PSL as I have had with the SVT. Personally I would take the SVT, I feel it can be just as accurate and while Rob stated earlier the barrel is thin.. the PSL barrel is thin as well.

I would sooner than the SVT, I think they are about even all around. The AK reliability is not really there with the PSL as they tend to be picky with ammo and many lemons made that do not cycle well.

I have owned 3 PSL's
Wont ever own one again.

I have owned now two SVT40 rifles. I will continue to shoot these.

Also I believe the PSL is easier to field strip.
The SVT40 is actually not that complicated to field strip. It is however a pain in the Posterior to do it.

I spend a good 5 minutes taking it apart and putting it back together.
With the PSL I could do it blind folded, field stripped(including cleaning rod) and back together in 45 seconds.

I personally feel the barrel heats up and causes inconsistent groups quicker with the PSL.

The PSL was simply cheaper to build.

Me personally, I would take my SVT-40 first and always, especially over my Garands,
my second choice would be my M1 Carbines.

At first the SVT-40 is a bugger to disassemble, but I took few hours of practicing the take-down and re-assembly of the
rifle and now it comes second nature for me. Takes the time to practice then its easy going from them on.
My problem is, I have 2 - SVT-40's, deciding which one to grab first would be my biggest decision...

For My Go-to-Gun.... Without hesitation YES !!!

Now that I have mine, I would say yes as well. I had the field stripping down after watching a youtube video, and could do it in my sleep.

I also like the PSL, but I don't own one at the moment.

Let me Guess a PSL 54C?
Not a real PSL but a century made parts gun thing.
A PSL or Romac III is just as dependable and any AK

I would take my PSL over a SVD anyday of the week. Fool proof dependability, and alot less to go wrong.
But then I build most of my own guns and dont buy them.

But as for taking a SVD into battle?
If that was the firearm my government issued to me I would have no choice.

If I was picking just for my own battle. (SHTF ect.) I would take something I would be able to get ammo for easily from just about anyplace.
So living in the US I would use something in a commonly used (easy to find anyplace walmart, small town gas stations ect.)US Military cartrage. 7.62x51 or 5.56x45
And I dont depend on childrens ammo. So good old 7.62 x 51 (308)
