1961 East German Makarov

The claims are that the East Germans made the best Makarovs; fit and finish are reported to be finest kind.

Yesterday I stopped at a local gun shop; noticed the owner had the wrong tag on a Mak; it said 1903 Colt .32. When I pointed it out to him he thanked me and changed the tag to reflect the right information. In an effort to maybe "convince" me to buy it he decreased the price by $60.00. It worked!

Although it wasn't a super good deal it what was priced fairly in the market. This one, imported by Century, was made in 1961 when I was 9 years old. I should look as good as this pistol! It is, as some say, a Walther PPk Clone. Straight blow-back in design, 9x18 Makarov caliber, pull down the trigger guard, pull slide rearward while lifting the rear of the slide up and let it slide forward. Fit and finish, while not as precise as a Walther, it is far and away better quality then other Eastern Bloc handguns from the same general family. Since pictures show and tell better here are some pictures of it! Range report to follow...

Nice EG Makarov, it will hold its own against any Walther in its class.

Yeap see link below, got it when the wall came down, I was stationed in Germany 88-92. Got a chunk of the wall that I got to break off the wall and still have the Stars & Stripes newspaper announcing the official Reunification of Germany.

I've got two, one with a better finish than the other. That good one I save, the other
I shoot. I bought the lesser finish one from a guy on a forum. Someone had painted it with some
type of black paint. I stripped it off, had a pretty good finish underneath.

The things just don't fail. It is one of the most reliable pistols I own. They easily eat any
ammo type, especially the steel case stuff.

Get that gun to the range and you'll really fall in love. I have a Bulgarian model and it's my favorite shooter. People at my club ( including me ) are always impressed how far I progress in our weekend competitions. I actually came in first in a head to head falling plate shoot, against all kinds of full size guns. Some were pretty tricked out, red dots, speed mods and all that stuff. I much prefer beautiful simple design of the old military stuff.
