This project seems like it's been going on forever, but it's comming to a close pretty soon, these photos are a week old and I have the handguard fitted now, just needs a couple more coats of finish. I still need to get a bottle of cold blue and one of those tan canvas m14 slings.

Wow... Just...Wow!!! I love that coloring. What did you do? Is that just an oil finish or did you stain it? Details please....

Thanks moe, that's just Minwax antique walnut satin polyshades, the stock is just plain ol' beech, normally I would use the original military finish on my rifles, but since this is kind of a Bubba job anyway, I thought I'd do something sexy, the key with Polyshades is that you shouldn't read the direction, forget the paint brush, the finish will be streaky, you have to spray it on, do a couple of coats then sand the finish down smooth, repeat, then do a finial light spray.

Any updates... have you fitted the handguard? More pix please :D

Aside from the dissimilar handguard are there any othe differences between the two stocks? That grain is too pretty to pass up!

Hey thanks for asking Moe, just for that, I went out and took some pictures of what I got, I have had another set back in the Hakim, nothing major, just clumsy me whacked the side of the butt against my dad's table saw, didn't ding the wood, but scratched my finish up, so last week I sanded down the butt and resprayed the area, the whole stock needs to be wet sanded and finial sprayed, the handguard needs one more coat to match I believe. I experimented alittle with the Oxpho-Blue I got in a few days ago, and WOW, this stuff really works, I did a small section from the front band to the muzzle brake, this part was totally in the white, and it is very close to the original blue on the rest of the barrel.

Check out my spliced piece at the end of the handguard, I'm down right proud of that, the Ljungman's handguard curves down sharply here to make room for the lock knob it uses on it's sight, since I had a couple extra messed up handguards, I decided to try it, came out better than I expected.

Maybe in a couple more weeks I will finally get this bad boy goin' again......

The butt looks different because of the overspray from where I touched up the other side and top.....

Geeze somebody paid attention in woodshop!!! That is some great finish work...

The bluing looks great... have you tried "super blue" how does it compare? I have heard Oxpho is the better of the two. I may have to give it a try!

Thanks Moe. It was all trial and error. The first handguard I fitted for it looked like a 2 year old did it....

I haven't tried SuperBlue, I tired PermaBlue, that's sold at Walmart, it is complete crap, give the metal a streaky gray color. I've also used Van's Instant Gun Blue, I think it's got some of the same chemicals as Oxpho-Blue has, they both smell the same and leave a funky smell on the metal, but Oxpho is better (stronger chemicals?) it leaves a darker more durable finish.
