In the JM Browning firearms museum, there are some toggle-action shotguns that he (JMB) experimented with, but didn't make due to Luger's existing patents.

I had heard of several experimental attempts at semi-auto (full-power battle cartridge) rifles in WW1, many required the use of greased cartridges (eg one variant semi-auto rifle only carried by Zepplin crews)

Well that's the coolest thing I've seen in a while. Once they un-earth that hidden bunker full of them and AIM has them for $100 bucks each, I just might get a few. Guess I shouldn't hold my breath...

John Pederson (father of the Pederson device) also submitted a rifle designed along the lines of the Luger toggle pistol. It is similar to the luger rifle, but did not fare well compared to the Garand.

Very interesting! I've never heard of that rifle before. Like coyote tracker, I have seen photos of the Pedersen rifle and it's toggle action.

That is really cool. Something you might find in a Harry Turtledove, alt-history novel.

Oh, all the "what ifs" that spring to mind are mind boggling.

Question: I obviously get the mechanics behind a recoil-opperated rifle, but why would a "Luger rifle" need lubed cases?

Also, I know I've just said the "what ifs" are numerous, but lets just say that the entire German military had adobted this rifle in WWI/WWII/Whatever; would that really have made a difference to the outcome?

Likewise, if the US were armed with, hell, I dunno... Krag rifles in WWII, and we were armed with the... Lee Metford, would that really have meant we'd of lost? The Germans, and her allies didn't loose just because the US were armed with a self-loading rifle

I don't know about his Luger rifle specifically, but the rifle I was thinking of was an early Paul Mauser design.
New thread talking about early semi-auto rifles and greased cartridges split-off here:
