Sorry for the delay in response..I was working in the Carolinas no internet to be had

WOW! Doc, Outstanding!!..

I remember a thread about this rifle back when you got it I believe. I was too caught up in the unscrubbed reciever to notice the W prefix..Good catch by you. :thumb:

I think it must be a "W prefix mystery rifle" as it sports the V in a circle cartouche as well..This is a very interesting find and it has made me rethink this whole endeavor..

When I first got mine and heard about others from John Wall read about them in Balls book, mine was thought to be the oddball perhaps even messed with as the others were in the VZ-23 stock sets with finger groove and VZ-23 front band(although I still have questions about these stocks as all the VZ-23 stocks I've been able to reference are slightly diff...Yugo Made replacements like the many K98 stocks??? just dont know :? )

My interest and thought was mainly..Who was the W prefix rifle made for?? Cav. troops/school, special unit, export..they are BO for the most part?? remember they were all supposed to be in VZ-23 stocks as far as anyone knew..

OK, fast forward..since this thread started we have discovered 8 of these rifles sharing the W prefix and V in a circle...But almost no two the same..some really big differences..and now Docs K98..

Well, my thought is I've been asking the wrong question!!..Its very unlikely IMO that such a varied group of rifles was ordered by or prepared for any one group..I think the question now must be WHERE! were these made and not just for whom..

Was it the infamouse VR.69 workshop??(V cartouche) or does the V simply stand for VODJNA(Millitary)..Was there another shop that worked on some of the odd lots while the nicely sorted pallets of M24, K98 and VZ-24 rifles went straight to the larger shops who could turn out the greater numbers?..Perhaps this could explain the absence of the Yugo crest and the blank left siderail..perhaps this shop did not even have these tools..

All complete conjecture on my part :D but with these thoughts in mind off I go to see the Wizard!

Below is another W prefix rifle I found while searching through other forums..I'm afraid it was late/early and I cant remember where #-o....

EDIT!! It was Mr. SVS's Rifle : ) Cant remember how/when but I've deleted the pic copies in my post here.. look below for more of the same rifle!

Thanks John !

This is an interesting topic, that's for sure. Have you touched base with NortherNug
about this ? Maybe he could ask Branko about it ?

Hey Doc,

I assume Nug may be to busy with other projects as he hasnt commented on this thread, it has been around quite a while and back when it started I made a thread over to GBoards linking back here..I contacted Branko about this early on and he was gracious enough to reply back. My first email only included a few pics and a link. I have since resent some other pics showing the smaller proofs in hopes they could answer some of Branko's questions. With all the new examples added to this thread lately (especialy that K98 with the V cartouche, W prefix and lack of Factory marking) I think I should forward another link to him. These things can move slowly and I can only guess how busy Mr. Bogdanovic is.. being the only Author on these rifles as well as having a life :D I will for sure update when I recieve anything.

Hi SVS,

Thank you for posting your rifle!..I had earlier found pictures of your rifle but could not remember where  If you look a few posts up you will see some of your other W 486 pictures added...I apologise for being a picture pirate..Arrrrgh

I dont see any import mark on your barrel or reciever..Can you tell us where you bought this rifle? was it from an importer or private sale etc.?

No import mark that I can find. Bought at a small gunshop in PA. They had no idea what it was, I knew it was a Yugo, figuring it was some sort of BO 24/52.
I think its been in the country for awhile. pre 1968?, It was covered in dust, but is in Excellent shape with a perfect bore.
I was glad to give them the $150 they were asking.

BUMP!

I see nothing has been added to this thread since January. I know there's a new addition over on G'boards and this topic was linked to it there- so I thought it well to bump this one back up to see if we can bring any new info to light.

Hi Guys..Another interesting W prefix rifle has shown up..this one is a K98k that has an unscrubbed reciever like DocXrings..4 digit all matching and as a bonus it was converted during the troubles in the 90's to be a Bosnian sniper ..check out the stripey German stock..Man talk about everything : )

Gents, thought I would get this topic going again. It is a Yugo 24/52c(?). I just hand picked a blank receiver and side rail from Samco. It is all matching in a Vz 23 stock with Vz 23 hardware. Has German marked take down disc. Serial number is W97. Don't know how to post pic's here so this link will take you to gunboards and the pictures. Thanks. Ed

I recently acquired one of these. It doesn't have many identifying markings on it.

Here are a few more pictures. The bolt and the barrel have matching serial numbers that don't match the Yugo serial on the receiver. The bolt also has a serial number that matches the receiver and stock.
