I found a sporterized Remington in a pawn shop that the receiver an barrel are dated Feb 43, I've always wanted one of these in the military furniture to go with my Garand so I picked it up with plans of restoring it back, it had an old Redfield scopemount an scope on it which I removed an I plugged the holes an cleaned it up. I'll slowly, as I can afford it get the stock an metal trimmings to put it back as it should look. I have a question though, the rear plugged holes will be covered by the rear sight once it comes in but the front two were drilled right in the 03 A3 which I hate an would love to get fixed. Not trying to fool anyone an you can clearly see the plugs but is there a way to stamp the 03 A3 back into the top as I do like being able to see it but its been erased by the drilling an now my plugs. Has anyone done this an is there some stamps that can be had somewhere that will allow it to be stamped back so it looks like it should? Thanks

Howdy,

These guys are fairly brutal on here with respect to one thing...Here is the Caveat...

Posts without pix are meaningless. It don't mean a THING! Post a pic, or 4 then you have true believers.

Without pix...its like dust in the wind..or breaking wind..its meaningless.

With that said, welcome to the forum Mr. Mongo. :)

you have two ways to go. one make an a4 clone. or fing some one that does engraving at home. they can recut the letters but it will show. also to get it back you will need another bolt.

Thanks guys, I know threads are useless without pics but I just picked it up so heres some from my cell, I knew I was going to have to get a replacement bolt body to get it back right as this one is ground a little an has a slight curve toward the rear so it will clear a scope, but that can wait, one item at a time, I want to get it in the right stock first, swapping bolts will probably be the last thing I do. I've ordered some sights for it for now.

The barrell where the front sight pins on has what appears to be JB Weld or epoxy in the I, it scatches out so just got to take some time an clean that up so the front sight will fit.

If your goal is to put it back into military configuration, then an unaltered bolt body should be your first "investment". Note that the current stock has a notch for the scope-altered bolt handle. You won't be able to close the bolt if you put the barreled action into an as-issued stock.

Good luck with your project. "Progess pix" always welcomed.

Bob S.

I do appreciate you wanting to put Her back in original form. I would be sorely tempted to make an A4 clone since the deed has already been done. Lots of guys are looking for a rifle to shoot in the new Sniper class. You might be able to trade with someone for a Barreled action that has not been altered.

I think I'm with singleshotcajun! You have a nice foundation for a A4 setup with the bolt and d&t receiver. You can get a scant grip stock and the bands etc. and be good to go! I'm starting to like scoped milsurps more and more as my eyes are getting old, but could never alter one myself!
In any case, hope you have fun with the restoration! Show some more pictures when done!

For vintage sniper, you must use the one-piece Redfield JR mount, or a modern clone of that. If the receiver is already drilled for that base, you would be golden. If it's drilled for some other base/bases, you could possibly need to drill 2 "new" holes to fit the Redfield base. That would make the receiver look like Swiss cheese and possibly weaken the receiver ring.

If that was the route you choose to try, it might be worth spending the denaro on a base to make certain it can be mounted. The location of the rear hole is pretty universal, but if the front screw does not fall on sound metal, or align perfectly with an existing hole, you may not be able to safely mount it.

So this brings me to an interesting question, as I have a 03'A3 that has been tapped for a B&L scope, I am faced with the same dilema of what to do to fix it...

What has crossed my mind several times as question is - Who made the 03 A4? SC, Remington, Both?

On and OP, if the mount you had was a Redfield Jr S - you might want to hold onto that, it might be an original... which someone may take off your hands for a tidy sum....

Bob S the redfield base you posted is what came with the rifle! If I wanted to go the A4 route where would I get the correct rings?
