Ooh, very nice. I have a 49/56 and love it. A 49 would be great to pick up, but I think a FN49 may have to come first.

I have a 49/56 as well and it is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I like it better than a M1A or G3.

Well, I like it better than a G3 but not as well as a M1A, so I guess that puts me in the middle category. I DO have a question, though.

My 49/56 (which is in 7.5 French, not a .308 conversion) throws brass close to 50 feet away. It's the most vigorous ejecting semi-auto rifle I've ever seen. PRVI is the only ammo I've ever used, so no experience with other ammo brands.

Is that what you guys experience, or do you think my gun is over-gassing?

I recently fired my 49/56 for the first time using the 7.5 prvi ammo in an indoor range. The brass was tossed forward hitting the petition but was not nearly as vigorous as yours. My guess is it would have landed 8 feet away . My first time shooting a french rifle and was pleased , I had to clear one round per mag but think it still needs some cleaning .

I bought an adjustable gas valve arrangement for my 49/56. I contact a fellow who goes by the name of starmetal on Gunboards, he was making them a couple of years ago, don't know if he is still doing it.
It is supposed to let you adjust it so the brass falls closer to you, ya know, in a nice order ready to be picked up. :D

Well, the fact that somebody saw the need for making a gas valve tells me that I'm not the lone ranger here. Thanks for that tip, Garra. I was unaware of the source.

I went through my e-mails looking for his contact information, must have been one of those PM conversations where I sent him a check for payment. The only way i found him again was using Google and found conversations on the subject on Gunboards. Seems this mod is really recommended on the rifles converted to fire the NATO round.

did some more nosin' around on gunboards, found him again, he was making the gas valve again as of this year, $38.00 shipped.

I have been shooting the same hand load in the MAS 49 for some time now. Ejection is to the right about three feet and fairly consistent in placing them in same general area. I bought a goodly supply of 7.5 French brass from Graph and Sons a few years back in bulk. Its all stamped Frontier and has proven to be very good stuff. I also have a fair amount of PRVI commercial but didn't really keep any track of groups or ejection with it. Pretty sure it was a lot like the hand loads. I would say the neither the 49 or the recently sold 49/56 were over gased. Unlike my Romanian PLC-54 7.62x54R that is waaaay over gased. :D

I remember seeing one of these in a shop for $350 when I started collecting 8 years ago. Wish I would have picked it up, won't see a deal like that again. I believe it had been converted to 308. Great looking rifle.
