James River made BM-59

Post by cwo4uscgret »

I picked this up last Saturday from my local gun dealer; less then a week from order to delivery by Classic Firearms. I took it to the range and shot some 1982 Lake City 7.62 after de-linking 200 rounds of it from its M-60 belted configuration. I just shot it for performance, not precision; it was flawless. Next range trip will be for accuracy. Here's what it looks like; I have a smaller BM59 flash suppressor that makes the trip-compensator look like a small cannon!

I've never shot nor seen one in the flesh. This type of m1 Garand re arsenal originated in Italy, no? They're definitely cool looking rifles.

FWIW: the BM59 rifles have a reputation for violent extraction/ejection. A friend has a James River BM59 which, as-received, would jerk hunks out of the rim of all the brass-cased ammo he tried - he was forced to use Wolf steel cased ammo to achieve proper function, though ejection was still notably 'positive'.
Being aware that the BM59 gas system is a modification of the M1, and also that there is an adjustable gas cylinder plug available for the M1 (Shuster) to permit adjustment of the gas system to function properly with a variety of ammunition types, I measured the BM59 gas cylinder plug and compared it to a standard M1 plug - the only real difference is the length of the portion of the plugs which enter the gas cylinder through the gas cylinder lock. I determined that the M1 plug would very likely work with only the addition of a spacer ring (.110" long) to the Shuster plug to adjust the depth to the correct length for the BM59. On receipt of the Shuster plug, it was installed, with the spacer ring, in the BM59 and adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions - the rifle works perfectly now with a variety of brass-cased ammo, without damage to the brass or violent ejection.

I really want one but they are banned in the free state of Merryland. We have some sad laws passed by ignorant assemblymen.

We were able to buy them as regulated rifles before they passed the safe act in 2013. Any regulated rifles became banned after it was passed.
Probably the evil detachable 20rd mag.

What a great rifle!
When it comes to ammo, ammo for the M60 or other NATO MG's is not the most accurate by design. Find some M-80 Ball ammo and you will be very happy with how the rifle will shoot.
