I know this isn't related to mosin nagants but this is a story i have to tell you guys. My cousin got his first milsurp a month ago. An SVT-40. He picked up some surplus ammo. I told him about how to clean after using surplus ammo but hes got a poor attitude to gun cleaning in general so he didn't listen to me and said that i was being obsessive. Well he put 100 rounds thru it and sprayed some rem oil in it, cycled the action a few times and put it in the safe. Three days later he went away on a trip and when he got back after three weeks later he opened the safe, got out his SVT 40 and guess what, it was rusted. And i said, well i told you to clean you're gun properly and all he said was 'dude, why didn't you tell me this was going to happen. The gun is in pretty bad shape. Hes going to take it to the gun smith tomorrow.

People who haven't witnessed the effects of corrosive ammo just don't have an idea what can happen. I did, essentially, the same thing when I fired my first Mosin. I shot CLP into it and put it up. Luckily, I checked it a couple days later, and then spent the next two hours trying to get it clean again. It's quite dramatic what the corrosive primers can do!

Luckily for me when i first got my mosin nagant I bought the barnaul 203g soft point. I asked some questions on yahoo answers about the nagants and i got told to go to this site. Here I found out about corrosive surplus. I went on a trip to the local city ( I live in a small town with one gun shop) and I went into a gun store and asked about 7.62x54r. The guy said he had some surplus and I asked if it was corrosive, he swore that it wasn't because it was boxer primed. I said to him if i shoot this ammo and it turns out to be corrosive and destroys my gun will you compensate me? He said that if anything happens to the firearms because of the ammo that it isn't their problem and if something messed up I was to contact the manufacturer.

Well the gun was oiled before storage.
Oh crap it was Remoil! (rust in a spray can)

After only sitting for a few weeks why is it going to a Smith?
I think you will find that it will all wipe or scrub off.
Take it down and scrub it.

Next stop using Remoil. The only thing that stuff does well is fill the can.
Crisco will work better then that crap.

I've been using Remoil for as long as I can remember, I've never had any sort of rust from it at all in all of the guns I've ever used it in.. It works fine..

The rifle wasn't cleaned properly, that's all..

I must admit that i use motor oil myself. It doesn't go far in the way of lubrication but it is so thick that it lasts for over a month. Just gotta put a few patches through the bore to clean it all out before shooting.

The previous owner of my Westinghouse used axle grease to store the rifle.

Anyway, sucks about that rifle.
But from what people on here have said scrubbing will get rid of the rust.
Anything happen to the gas system?

The gas system was rusted to. You need to force it if you want to cycle the action. He paid $2000 at auction for it (new zealand $) The entire rifle was still covered in cosmoline. Looked like it had never seen service.

Bottom line , CORROSIVE AMMO , plan on cleaning that rifle very soon after shooting , BEST is to pour very hot water down that barrel (make a funnel ) and at least a gallon of HOT water!
Then clean it as a normal shooter.
OR buy non corrosive ammo and be lazy !!!

I once bought ammo for my ruger mini 30 that I was assured was non corrosive. Well, they lied. I had to beat the handle with a hammer to get the action broke free. Several hours later, I finally got it cleaned up, and there was absolutely no evidence of my sloth, so there is still hope for that svt. :thumb: Bet he cleans it next time.

i'm gonna come out and say it, if someone buys a $2000 firearm and dosn't treat it like a baby by spraing the action with some remoil after corrosive ammo, he deserves what's coming to him

The rifle however, dosn't

I don't think you were rude, it is up to the owner to be familiar with the rifle, ammo, and cleaning techiniques to protect his investment. That being said, there is a lot of misinformation being presented with surplus ammo. Mildly corrosive, slightly corrosive, and some will even outright lie and say non corrosive. The stuff I bought had been repackaged to appear as factory ammo. I was young, and didn't know better. It was a learning experience. I am sure I am not the only one that has ever been out right lied to. However, all of this is irrelevant, because it appears that the op had warned the owner, and his warnings were simply ignored. Bet that doesn't happen again. I wish him the best, and he shouldn't have too much of a problem cleaning up his svt, and if he is unwilling to properly care for it, I'll bet he sells it off to a better home. :thumb:
