Hi all, this thread is fascinating. Is it possible to determine the service history of a rifle from the serial number or other numbers? I know that the number 5 was used during the Malayan Emergency for example. Do any records still exist?

Hi
Recently acquired No 5 Mk1 in Auckland, NZ.

End cap - Yes
Serials match - Yes (except magazine which has no markings)
Generally good condition, at least as good as the Queen let me use in 1960

Hi Tiki,

I recently inherited what looks like the real deal.

No5 MK1 (F)
5/47 AA 8287

Barrel is scalloped has marking 303" 2-22" 18 1/2 TONS.

Matching serial on the receiver and bolt. Magazine has no markings on it.

The rifle is a little battered. Anyone have any suggestions on restoring it without ruining it's historic value? I'd like to display it. If I'm not planning on firing it any time soon should I leave it oiled or take the oil off it? Also, any suggestions on how to make it inoperable without doing any damage to it or ruling out firing it in the future would be appreciated.

Van Auk

Add mine:

6/47 AA 9735

Can we get an updated list in order?

Data base updated 30 April, 2016 but now maintained in a separate Sticky. Continue to post your rifle info here, however.

If you wish to add additional info, including mismatched bolt numbers, contact myself or Tommy Atkins.

No guarantees on speed of updates-I'm old and cranky.

No5 Mk1
ROF(F)
4/45
L8595
No foreend cap
Matching except mag (numbered 3408)
Has US import mark under barrel which is odd as I'm in England!

In dire need of a thorough clean as absolutely soaked in oil/cosmo fresh out of storage and saved from a firm here who deactivate rifles, (and I mean saved - they absolutely butcher them!)
