Gold 33 stamped on cut down stock

I just got this 1898 krag for real cheap because obviously it is not original. What I can see is this gold 33 stamped into the stock where the guards have been removed. Anyone have any idea what they are?

To take a guess at it- prison guard rifle, border patrol, police force maybe... :think:

If you could prove it was used by one it would be worth a little more to a collector of that type of stuff. Is there any stamps on the wood or metal that isn't from the original maker.

Try looking up DCM cut down rifles while I don't hold much hope it could be one, maybe you'll gain more knowledge about this symbol modification? Again, Ask over on the Krag Collectors forum?
