The bore from firing blanks, then storage in closet. Those Legion Army boys were never much for cleaning guns.

Shooting the 220 rn as the most accurate load is a myth . The Army picked that bullet for down range performance . I have won military rifle matches with a 130 spire point bullet in both of my 98 rifles and my 96 . All 100 yard 5-shot groups from the bench were under 1 inch . A friend also shot around an inch with that bullet in his 98 . Another club shooter shot back to back sub 1.4 groups with his 98 with the 155 Palma . None of us have ever shot that well with any of the 220 rn bullets , with many different loads .

With a damaged bore, the longer bearing surface on a long round nose might be more consistent, and will "slug-up" to fill the grooves better.
Arguing with someone who denounces reason is like administering medicine to a corpse.

Libertytreecollectors had a Krag that sold for$895, slightly more than I got mine -and at it sold fast. Here are their photos before they go down since the item is sold. All photos are libertytreecollectors.

US Springfield Model 1898 Krag Rifle #475408
Serial #475348 This offering is for the pictured Springfield Model 1898 Krag Rifle. In good looking condition, it was the 1st smokeless powder, small caliber repeater rifle in the US Arsenals and served in front line service until 1907.

Metal finish is worn blue turning a patina on the barrel bands and trigger guard. Mechanically appears fine. Serial number dates production to 1903.

American walnut hardwood stock and hand guard, 1903 dated cartouche on the stock, P marked grip, minor dents. Hand guard and a small crack ahead of the rear sight.

Chambered in 30-40 Krag, the bore has only fair rifling, dark with frost lands and grooves.
