I finally got my 1898 Krag out to the range. I was somewhat skeptical of how she would shoot, due to the lands in the barrel being quite worn. After going through a box of Remington Core-Lokt (?) I was pretty pleased with the results, a reasonably tight grouping at 50 yds. It seemed, though, that she was consistently shooting high and to the left. Aiming very low, I was able to put rounds dead-center. Is this a marksmanship issue, or do Krags tend to shoot high?

It seems that most milsurps have the potential to shoot high. Lots of folks have had great success with replacing the front sight with a taller one. Krags are sweet rifles. Congratulations on your find and its shooting prowess.

The factory ammo isn't loaded to origional specs, might have something to do with shooting high. Origional was either 200 or 220 grain(don't remember which) I think the Remington stuff is 180gr.

My Krag does not shoot high. I can use a 6 O'Clock hold on a 4" bull at 50 yards and have them hit center. I use 173 grain FMJ, 150 grain RN , and 170 grain RN, and impact spot is all the same.
You have a windage knob to help with the left-right issues..

Ammo selection will change POI in most rifles. Bullet weight, powder charge, etc. This is one rifle you will want to reload for! I get super results from one of my Krags using a cast bullets.
Which rear sight do you have? There are several options that could be found on your Krag, the 1896 type sight does not have a windage adjustment, the others (as I recall), are all adjustable for windage.
Also possible that a former owner changed or filed the front sight to suit?

Lastly, this thread is worthless without pics! Let's see your Krag 8)

This book
http://archive.org/download/modernrifle ... uds_bw.pdf
"Modern Rifle Shooting from the American Standpoint"
Has quite a bit of information on obtaining the best accuracy from the Krag rifle, and some very interesting information on the military and civilian target sights available when the Krag was the go to rifle for match competition.
A great read, and one of the musts for those interested in the Krag and early 20th century target shooting in the U S.
