They call it an 1881 but from the sorry picture I see Checkering and an old style rear sight. Is there such a thing as a short rifle or is this just a cut down bubba gun??

Many of the older Swiss rifles were cut down to be sold as "Carbines"....handy for hunting in the 60's.
I have a 1896 rifles that was like new and cut down and sold as "The Alpine Carbine" Very well done but was never an official anything in the Swiss military.

Well this one I got for $115. 23” barrel with dove tailed front sight installed. Looks to me to be originally a 69 or 71. Has checkering on forearm wood. Tube magazine holds 6 including lifter, so maybe originally a carbine? Buttstock does NOT look original vetterli to me. Very roughly installed with various crack repairs down quite roughly with standing glue on surface of wood. I did manage to swap bolt with a converted centerfire bolt I have and got it to shoot. No kaboom!! Had to use rubber malot to open bolt. Seems dry firing the rim fire bolt has put two “dents” of metal at chamber opening, grabbing the expanded fired brass case. Should be able to file down the two little dents for proper extraction.

I think the only thing I want to do to this rifle other than make it centerfire, is get a correct buttstock. Any suggestions where I might find one?

According to this site mine is actually a cut down M-69/71.

“ Bern started producing the M-69/71 in 1875 at serial 114.001 all older serials could have been made by several other manufacturers too.
In 1875 they made 8000 rifles so till # 122.001”

What buttstocks are compatible? 71’s, 78’s, 81’s...etc??
