Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Any of you guys hunt with you K31?

#1 Post by arky65 » Wed Oct 02, 2019 12:56 pm

I, am thinking I will use my K31 to take a deer this year. The only .308 bullets I have on hand to load are Sierra 150 PH and 165 GK. Anyone have experience loading either of the above for deer hunting?

I've hunted here in lost Prairie for some 45 years. Age caught up with me, so unless I take a deer or elk from the back bedroom window, I don't hunt anymore, and taking either of those from the back bedroom window is much easier than you might imagine. I've included a photo of the elk herd that visits our south pasture every spring and very early fall.

My son and grandson now do all the hunting. The attachment is of his Swiss rifle and a typical absolutely repeatable target group. Many might not agree, but we feel in the 7.5 x 55 cartridge a 150 grain projectile is rolling the dice. Even the 165 grain game King is going to require a well-placed shot in our cartridge.
My son does his hunting with a Hornady 190 grain ELD projectile.
The 150 and 165 green projectiles may work well for a lot of hunters, but most of us here in Montana won't roll the dice, particularly when it comes to elk.

This is five shots from 100 yards and completely repeatable.

Our rough head count on the Meadow Peak elk herd this spring was 185

This is the west side of the house with the South pasture on the right. The elk come out of the trees into the pasture and usually within an easy 200 yards.

I have hunted quite a bit with a K31. So far one hog and two elk. The hog with a Remington 180 grn corelokt and the elk with the old style barnes bullets. I think the bullets you have on hand would be fine for deer.

I hunted with Swiss rifles for a number of years, had great success with both whitetails and feral hogs (most of the latter on the order of 150-200 lbs). I used 150-grain Hornday SPs early on, but upgraded to the 165-grain Sierra GKs after reading this thread: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/theswis ... ate#p25722 .

I decided to stop using the GKs after I lost a hog I'd shot quite close to my ladder stand (say 25-30 yards). He dropped in his tracks (not unusual with the K11 or K31) but actually got back up after a couple of minutes and made it across the landline. I was unhappy with myself about that, but read later that the GK is meant for long range and bigger game. So there's that.

Here's one I shot with the 150-grain Hornady InterLock:

And below that, one I shot with the 165-grain Sierra Game King:

Guy's thanks for the responses. I would have responded sooner, but I never got notifications of responses, think I have fixed it.
sfk55; would you share the load data for the load of the pictured target? nice setup what scope base you using? I understand shooting out the window, I my
deer stand is my front porch.

longcruise; thanks for the reply

professrh; interesting reading, thanks for the thread link

I have spent the last few weeks on load development for an accurate hunting load, here are some of my observations using IMR 4064.

My K31 will not shoot 150 Sierra pro hunter (SPH) or 165 Core lokt, loaded with IMR 4064 very well, I have tired different charge weights and seating depths, all look like a pattern.
The 165 SGK showed promise real quick and have been able to refine the charge and seating depth to get consistent MOA to sub MOA 5 shot groups @ 100 yards.

After reading the link from professorh I will be trying some of the powders mentioned, as I have them on hand. I went with Sierra 165 and IMR 4064 because Sierra manual listed it as the best accuracy and hunting load, with 165 and 168 and I had both on hand.

Thanks again for response.
Wish you all good hunting this season

For the record, I'm using Varget in all of my loading for Swiss rifles. Load data from the thread I mentioned above.

Can't believe anybody else is up this time of the night. After Deer season I will work something up with Varget. I use it in several other cartridges.
