I have posted this on various parts of this forum to try and work out what the writing might mean...

The flag appears to be trying to imitate that of the Imperial Navy's flag, however it is not accurate. It is missing a few sun rays...

As that is the case I highly doubt it was applied by the Japanese soldier who was issued with the rifle. I also doubt due to this mistake that it would be the work of someone attempting to 'enhance' the rifle in modern times.

The painting does appear to have age. I personally feel it would have been applied shortly after the war by the veteran who bought it home with him.

I am very interested to know if the writing does mean anything - if it does (or indeed doesn't) that will shed more light....
