I know it has some issues but I paid south of $275. I think this is a post WWI amory referb because of the rear sight and maybe the stock. I understand that when the smaller parts have all four digits of a S/N then it is not original WW1. Looks like the bolt was bent which is too bad as it looks like it was all matching to the rest of the rifle. Also looks like a reblue but I have heard that the Germans did reblue the older ones so I am not sure. There is a crack in the stock that Candyman (sight unseen) said would be easy to fix. He did want to see some photos. Bore looks very good and the store owner that sold it said the last owner said it shot great and that was after I had paid for it. The handguard does have the same S/N.

Kevin

Being American of Prussian extraction, I am partial to the Danzigs, our great port city. The rifle looks nice :D ; you may want to change the stock eventually. I am far from an expert, but I am not aware of any examples of the transition/modified Gew 98s having the export model stock with the cut-out for the long handguard retaining clip to attach to the barrel behind the rear site. It is a fine place-holder for now, or you could always carefully fill it in. However before I paid to have the stock repaired, I would consider whether you want to replace it altogether.

Still a nice weapon though, CONGRATS :thumb:

Nice looking rifle and a good deal as well! Looks like the metal is all matching.
As was said, the stock looks to be from an export model. I'm guessing the bolt handle was turned down and back to make it more sporter looking. Let us know how it does at the range!

You just don't see a nice one :thumb: like that, hardly ever, anyway. Not in my area.

Well another shoutout to the fine teaching and craftmenship of Candyman! This is another of my rifles that I got to learn about stock repairs and fine finishing. We took that way too light colored handguard and matched it to the nice stock. We fixed the crack with a fix that may not show up in the photo :D and lastly we spliced in a matching piece of walnut to patch a chip.

Kevin

Hey Lee I got the H band sling hook bent back in place with breaking it off....
