The site, http://chinesefirearms.com/ has a good bit of info about Chinese firearms in general, but thanks to a guy named Gindenburg on another forum I found out that they had purchased Model 1888 Mannlichers from Austria, and made their own ammunition for them.

There's a book titled China's Small Arms of the 2nd Sino-Japanese War for sale on that site (http://chinesefirearms.com/ad2.html), but only the English version is available. Reviews have stated that the best version is the Chinese one, followed by the Chinese/English version, because the images are clearer and in color.
