For all intents and purposes, this is a M1866 Chassepot rifle. But - the left side of the receiver is blank, there is no serial number on the stock - and no roundel (though hard wood plug is present).

You have one of the early guns that did not have the arsenal and model marking on the receiver. It also has Belgian proofs, so it was sold commercially by Belgium after France was done with it..

Thanks Dale - I managed to find out that it was actually manufactured in Liege, not one of the French arsenals as are usually seen.

This one however has the hard wood plug, which other Liege made examples do not. It appears to have additional marks, so it looks like this one could have been accepted by the French military - where the other examples I have seen were not...

Rule .303: These were made in Belgium, England, Italy, and France, so that does not surprise me at all....

Know a little more,

curious what the '60' on the butt plate is for, I think unit marking on French rifles of this period?

Not sure what barrel band marking are, I don't think serial numbers...
