Guys: For 40+ years I have wondered what the muzzle cap for the Berthier Mosqueton and Carbine looked like. According to some of the heavy hitter collectors in the 1980's, like Bruce Stern and others, it was made of brass, and had a polygonal section with a dome. The late Bruce Stern had one, but I never saw it in person.

Well, today, a fellow wanders into the store with a Continsouza Mle M 16, he got it in WW 2, from a German Police Barracks in France, and miriable dictu, it had the long sought after muzzle cap!! I bought the gun and the cap and here are the pix of the famous "Ghost Accessory". Lebel and Berthier Rifle Caps can be found, but to my knowledge, the Carbine Cap is almost never seen.

Octagonal Cross Section, overall length is 15 mm. Larger diameter is 15 mm, across the flats; 13 mm. It was stuck on the barrel since WW 2, penetrating oil, and a cleaning rod removed it.... :D

I will post pix of the Carbine later on...This Cap is just to rare to wait for!!!

Dale

File comment: Could not be removed by hand, stuck fast on the barrel

"Laiton", not "lation".

Great find. After all the dried-on crap has been cleaned of the cap and rifle, how firmly does it stay attached? Looks reminiscent to the Swiss G1889-K31 muzzle covers, albeit without the front sight snaps.
