Was browsing one of my local pawn shops today and ran across a different looking Mosin. The tag read that it was an Austrian made Mosin 91. The light was not good enough to read the writing on the receiver. It looked like an early Century import marked on the left side of the receiver? Some place in Georgia, maybe? It was, or seemed to me to be a little shorter than my Mosin-Nagants 1891-30s. Priced at (ouch) $350.00. They also had a wartime round receiver 1891-30 for the same money. Rough machining on the receiver. No camera with me so no pics. Also had a Hungarian carbine (M95)? with the odd ammunition. Rifle looked pretty good but the price was right up there with the Nagant.

Austria did not manufacture the Mosin Nagnt rifle. They did have them in hand though acquiring them primarily through capture during the Balkan Wars of WW1. If it is shorter than a normal 91/30 you might be onto something or not. The guys on here that are very good at this could help you immediately but they have to see it.

Austria-Hungary captured large numbers of Russian made M91's during WWI. Generally they were inspected and marked, then issued to reserve units. Some were even rechambered to the 8x50R cartridge without being rebored. A lot of both were used in the fighting. Later they were sold to Finland. I have a well-used example that I did some stock repair to, and replaced missing parts. It actually shoots fairly well. This after being all over Eastern Europe, then (probably) used in the Winter War in 1939 between Finland and the Soviets. That thread was lost with the old forum

Run back. Make sure its not a M91 If Dragoon your still lucky depending on its markings see second reference
background info http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread. ... -Reference

second reference  shorter than M91 but look like an m91 flavor ( Dragoon and Cossack) http://www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinM91D.htm
Did it look like a M91? Is it original or an arsenal redo? See the markings and tons of pics-- You might have a winner if you can get the price down see if they take $300 cash for a nice M91 with the cleaning rod- be sure of that, and maybe a nice original leather sling??? An M91original cleaning rod is like 60-80 bucks. Go for the Mosins. think MOSIN.
Cash talks when laid out on the counter  credit card or check  :violin:  lots of luck trying to deal. Lay 3 $100 bills on the counter and deal.

M95s even in 8x50r are $150-175 rifles as carbines, the long rifle is a much harder find matching with sling and no import mark. Check for conversion to 8x56R, S or H on the barrel and if the long rifle is a Budapest. A Budapest is a good find in either caliber especially if it has an H stamp. Then ammo is easy to get and it can be shot without reloading/reforming 8x50R. Carbines are at every show- common junk with import mark, but long rifles in original WW I condition lacking import marks are a great find at $200-300

If I am not mistaken it looked like this. No sling, no cleaning rod IIRC. Stock was darker but in decent shape.https://www.bing.com/images/search?view ... ajaxhist=0

Look for KA3if it is a rare cossack. I think its a Finnish or Romanian dragoon. Id say Finnish. I'd have to see it close up. It has the stock splice and dragoon type hand guard. Hex receiver most likely dated in the 1920s and the older sights. No cleaning rod is a bummer. Check the bore and does the bolt match? If a dragoon or rare cassock KA 3. The rod is 26 1/4 with the older style sprial head. Is the rifle approximately 48 1/2 inches long?? Look for a KA3 on the receiver top=Cossack if so buy it.
