I have a refurb'd nearly brand new VZ24 and I'll have pics later tonite but in trying to nail down a year of manufacture on it I'm coming up empty reading about the rifles and serial numbers. It's been so well and thoroughly scrubbed that the only marks are a four digit serial number with no prefix or suffix, the standard "blahblahblah brno vz.24" along the left of the receiver, and the barrel shank has a "7.9" (I know that that's the caliber).

In my reading this isn't a Romanian contract but has the hallmark very deep/dark Russian capture kind of finish on the metal.

...thoughts?

Its the latest batch from AIM last week...brand new walnut stock, finish is 100%...I'm extremely pleased with it, bore is a little grungy though, needs a third foam treatment tonite there's still fouling and debris in the grooves but the rifling is very strong.

post up a pic or two VinnAY, would love to see the stock. I can get a VZ 24 RC for $399.00 from Montreal, though after taxes and shipping...closer to 475$ described as VG condition overall. I bought my M96 Swede and my K31 from this vendor. He describes the condition of the rifle accurately, thus no surprises when you get it in the mail.

Are there any proof marks at all? Maybe under the wood or on the barrel. They normaly had a small Czech lion with a letter and a two digit year date, at least on the Czech army rifles. If it's been scrubbed clean of all proofs not sure how to determine year.

Not necessarily scrubbed, but could be a contract rifle; not for Czech military

Since it came from AIM and is a VZ24 refurbed by Romania, it is probably a left over contract rifle that was thrown in to the Romanian contract. Probably made 1937-1940. There were a lot of misc. rifles thrown in to the Romanian contract including lion crested and year crested.
Regards,
Bill

The siderail marking in the photo is ZBROJOVKA BRNO, A.S. VZ. 24 (ZB). That replaced the earlier marking of CESKOSLOVENSKA ZBROJOVKA,A.S.,BRNO VZ.24 (CZB) in 1940-1941. Apparently either the Germans or the Slovakians wanted the "Czechoslovakian" dropped from the marking since there no longer was such a country, Slovakia being granted independence and established as a German puppet state. The Romanian rifles were made at the Brno branch factory at Povazska Bystrica (dou) in Slovakia.

With that late date your rifle should not be a left over rifle from some other contract. Possibly the workman who scrubbed the crest off the receiver went a bit too far and also scrubbed the serial number off. When the serial number was restamped, they left off the prefix which should have been somewhere in the GR to YR range.

When the siderail marking change was made, it was not done cleanly. The first known ZB marking appears in the GR block. Then known markings are as follows:
GR - CZB and ZB mixed (first known ZB marking)
HR - CZB
OR - CZB and ZB mixed
PR - ZB
RR - CZB and ZB mixed (last known CZB marking)
SR - ZB

This is based on only a limited number of reported rifles.

Regards,
Bill

Hi Vinnay,

Got back home and the VZ 24 with non matching SN bayonet from AIM was waiting for me. About the same as yours except it had a full serial number and the crude vestiges of a crest left (not fully scrubbed) . Side rail had the earlier pre 1940-41 marking Waffenamt described. Serial number on receiver matches stock. Its slathered in cosmo but overall a very nice gun for the money IMO.

Its my first VZ 24. I have another P marked one (Chinese Contract) coming that has been rode hard and put away wet. Will post pix comparing the 2 when it shows up.
