Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

M38 with sub-caliber devices....

#1 Post by Rapidrob » Tue Jun 18, 2019 6:45 pm

A good Lady friend of mine has been taking lesson from me for a year now on how to shoot. She's 80 and was married to a anti-gun Britt husband for 50 years.
Now that he is gone she has become a 'Gun Nut" She owns 1911 pistols, AR-15's, all sorts of .22 rifles and shotguns.
I built her a 200 yard range on her property.
Today she wanted to try something "different". So knowing she could not take the recoil from a 7.62x54R cartridge, I did the next best thing. I took one of my M38's with two sub caliber devices. One in .32 ACP the other in 7.62x25.
I set up an 8" AR500 gong and a 4" AR500 gong at 30 yards.
I did not have much hope in either cartridge shooting very well. My .32ACP is my load of a cast .313 71 grain bullet over 2.8 Grains of Unique.
The 7.62x25 is 7.7 grains of AA#9 under an 85 grain .309 FMJ.
Marjorie ended up stacking the .32 ACP bullets one on top of the other. Neither target was hard for her to hit.
The 7.62x25 rounds stayed in a nice 2" group.
I was pleasantly surprised with how well the sub caliber device worked even with the bullets jumping two inches into the carbines rifling.
The .32ACP had no real recoil to speak of. The 7.62x25 was equal to a .30 Carbine in recoil. Accuracy with the too small bullet was really very good.
What is nice about shooting either sub-caliber device is you have lots of time between shots to talk and think about the next shot as you load.fire, unload, knock out the fired case ( 7.62x25) the .32 almost drops out, and start the procedure all over again.
You can shoot the .32ACP all day long for pennies a shot using a cast lead bullet.
I push the 7.62x25 to the max,so FMJ's are needed. Still,if you reload you can really save bucks over 'store bought" ammo.
Give the sub-caliber devices a try. The whole family could have a blast shooting.
