nice guesses everyone! it is a last ditch ceramic pottery grenade. these were made in several different variations with and without glazing. this one is the brown glaze variation. i have another that i brought home from Japan that is not glazed. you can still find these in Japan and other island areas being sold as "flower pots".

Proper nomenclature is the Type-4 ceramic (pottery) hand grenade. Held 3.5 oz of type 88 explosive material. First reported by U.S. Ordnance intelligence folks was in the Ormoc area of Leyte Island, P.I.
