A couple of weeks ago I called Century to order another Vostok Ural. I shoot a three lugged Vostok in club matches and wanted another for "insurance". I have a Russian CM 2 but do not like it nearly as much as the Vostok. My rep at Century told me that they had a small lot of East German Suhl 150 match rifles graded "good incomplete" and that I should get one of those. Two years ago CDNN had some and they sold fast and I missed out. I rolled the dice and ordered two of the Suhls. It is always nerve racking ordering a rifle sight unseen with no return privileges and you know that something is missing on it,oh ya parts are also made of unobtainiom.I can't give the price without violating Century's dealer pricing policy but lets say they were half if not one third the going rate of ones in similar condition on that have sold on Gunbroker recently. I picked them up yesterday and am thrilled. The "incomplete" part was the rear sight on both. Both have front sights, very good to Excellent metal and ultra nice bores, like new. They were packed in cosmoline and have minor scrapes on the wood. The stocks have an adjustable cheek piece that moves fore/aft up and down and have vertically adjusting butt plates. One has a minor crack at the wrist like many thin wrist pistol grip target rifles develop. The Suhls did not get a brass rod in the pistol grips, I will remedy that. I plan to scope one and get a rear sight for the other. I will post pictures soon. This gamble paid off.
Here is the ad from two years ago from CDNN. I called and they do not have anymore rear sights, guess I'll mount a Williams Foolproof for Anschutz.

Dang it SSC, don't you have enough high dollar .22s to smoke our butts with already? We're going to have to have a $400+ shoot for all you guys and a $200- shoot for the rest of us.

Seriously now! :P

If we are going by the prices I paid then the only one I could not shoot would be the Valmet. The rest were 300.00 and under. I started working the triggers tonight and so far am impressed with these Commie twankeetwo's. I still have to round up some a rear sights, I got sniped on ebay today, thought I might win a Kimber M82 rear sight.

The one with the hairline crack on the wrist was already repaired, not exactly how I would have done it but a sturdy repair with a wood screw and epoxy. Instead of going the length of the grip someone came in from the receiver side at an angle with the screw and it seems to be strong so I am just dressing the outside of the crack. The bolts on these rifles are very substantial and most of the rifle seems to be a dup of an Anschutz 54. I took the bolts apart and cleaned out a ton of cosmoline, now the lock times are quicker. The triggers are a thing of beauty and an engineering masterpiece. With the help of the schematics found on Rimfirecentral I easily adjusted the triggers to single stage with no creep and a VERY light let off. I bought a cheapy Tru Glo 6x24x44 fine crosshair scope for it but did not have tall enough rings in my stash for it so I mounted a really cheap NC star 4x32 and if time and weather permits I'm shooting it this afternoon. So far so good.

I shot this afternoon, in a light rain with howling wind . The cross hairs on the NC Star are very thick but at 25 off bench I am pleased. Tried Remington target,Aguila Match Rifle, and Eley Club. After three shots of Eley Club I had to remove my bolt and check for a squib because there was only one hole in the paper, no squib. I proceeded to put another ten in the same hole. On my way home I bought some Millet tall rings and at home mounted the Tru Glo scope. The radius of the Suhl receiver is smaller than normal so I had a gap in between the bottom of the rings and the receiver(slight) filled it in with Devcon. Too busy to shoot again this weekend but next Friday can't come soon enough. I should have the Williams Anschutz rear sight for the other rifle by then.

Century is now officially out of them. Allan Schisel sold a few in less than one hour of posting them earlier this week and will be posting more on his website
http://www.allans-armory.com/aa.php
They are a little more than I paid but there is no gamble when you buy from Allan.
Get one if you can while the getting is good, I love mine. One of these may even replace Rosa part of the time in my match rotation. I just have to build some stock spacers and get the length of pull right. Both of them only have one spacer and I need to add at least an inch to them.
A friend of mine ordered two and picked them up today, he received one three position style rifle like mine and one Bench rest style(the top one in the picture). Both of his are really nice as well.

Got the Williams rear sight mounted on one with a little help from Devcon plasti steel also mounted a cheap super duper scope on the other.I made some butt stock spacers out of Heart Pine and painted them black now the length of pull is almost right for me. Made it out today, windy but nice weather. It is always windy, our range is right on Galveston bay. So far I am pleased with both. My iron sighted one did very well(no target pictures) but I need to add some weight in the butt stock as it is very end heavy and for me that makes Offhand shooting more difficult. This is the first time I have ever shot with a scope over 10 power. It is mighty freaky at 24 power watching the bullet fly to the target.
Next friday I'll bring some mayonnaise and a fly target with me.

Does anyone know where I could get an original Suhl rear sight? It seems that the Suhl front sight is offset so that the Anschutz rear sight does not match and I have to run it nearly all the way out to the right. I tried two Anschutz and a Walther sight fr the same result. Has anyne else had this problem? Any fixes if the Suhl sight ca't be found? abrams

That's a new on me Abrams. I would suggest that you make absolutely sure that your front sight is mounted properly. Does your Suhl have a bolt on front sight dovetail mount or is it integral to the barrel.I have seen Suhls with both type front sight mounts. Both of mine are integral and milled dead on center. I like my Williams Foolproof target sight, I did have use some Devcon to eliminate wiggle from a .005" difference in fit with the dovetail on the Williams. Naturally , I would prefer to have a Anschutz or a Kimber rear sight for it but for know the Williams dos everything I could want one to do. The only problem with a Williams sight is that if you routinely make a lot of corrections it will wear out even if properly lubed because it is made from aluminum. As I understand it the Suhl made rear sights were not very good and most had excessive backlash that could not be removed. Most Foks looking to replace a suhl rear sight use Anschutz, many have found Kimber's Australian made rear sights for the Government model 82 work great on a Suhl 150. I bid a a few Kimber sights on ebay but am far to frugal to pay the going rate on those.

It's the only way I have a chance against your arsenal of expensive target rifles. I found a substitute for a No. 3 rear peep - I might be shooting a $60.00 rifle against you next - boy wouldn't you feel foolish if I won or shot even in just one round.
(that's actually the start of the head games, he's pretty easy)
