“Cheap, indestructible tools, parts and other uses for a plastic cutting board”

Padding your gun barrel while using a bench vice can easily be done using this tip:
Harbor Freight, Wal-Mart, or the like sell white plastic kitchen cutting boards. These cutting boards are made out of very tough high-density nylon plastic. By using a band saw or jigsaw you can cut these boards into all sorts of shapes and sizes. I have found many uses for the cut pieces. Some of these that I have made are:
Pads for vice jaws.
A good backstop for driving out pins
A drift for driving out/adjusting front sights.
The plastic can be milled, tapped, and glued. By using hole saws and other circular/tubular cutting bits you can make all sorts of round punches and drifts
Making a replacement recoil block for Marlon .22 semi-auto rifles (recoil blocks made from the cutting board will not break)
Shims for the butt plates of rifles or shotguns. The plastic can be shaped and sanded to alter the firearms pitch and length of pull.
It gives a nice “White Line” look to your firearm.
A magazine follower for semi-auto .22 magazines that will hold open the bolt after last shot.
A grooved and canted drain board for cleaning small gun parts. Since the board is white, all small parts can bee seen and laid out as needed. You can make a lip around the drain board so parts stay on the work surface.
You can assemble the parts into the firearm using the board with no fear of having the bluing marred or the wood scratched.
When you wear out the surface of the board or flat tool, you can use your router to “mill” the surface smooth again. I have one “assembly-board” that is over 25 years old and still going strong after several re-facings as the surface has been roughened up by hard use.
Shims and wedges to pry broken stock wood apart to allow glues to be applied.
Plastic primer powdered bullets for all sorts/calibers of pistols
A back-stop for fired pellets
By drilling holes into the plastic you can make:
A punch set holder
A case holder for reloading
A dial indicator holder for timing barrels
The list is endless. What ever you can think of that needs to be tough and non-marring or non-rusting, and is easy to fabricate can be made with this plastic. The plastic so far has with stood cleaners, acids, and oils with no problems at all. Wipe the plastic clean and your good to go. The cutting boards can be had for very little money.
Enjoy this tip!

I have one mounted on the tail gate of my PU. When I drop the gate I have a flat solid cutting surface at just the right height to cut bait while surf fishing or to clean fish or small game for the cooler. It has even served as a table of sorts in the field.
